Tenterden Folk Festival 2006 makes the most of the new licensing laws
Tenterden Folk Festival 2006 is set to make the most of the changes in the rules for regulated entertainment. As a direct result of the changes the Festival is able to make better use of some venues and to use venues that have not been available in the past.
The Eight Bells and the White Lion have retained their licences for live music so will continue to host many of the popular festival events. However The William Caxton and The Vine Inn are now also licensed for live music so we are better placed to use these venues and have been able to add extra guests and events to the Festival programme. Following the major refurbishment of the Vine, Shepherd Neame have specifically request that the pub be much more involved in this year’s Festival and made a generous donation to ensure that it is. The extra events in the Vine will include an Anglo French music session lead by the Sussex based band The Drift as well as extra music showcases and sing- rounds over the weekend.
We have also used the new Temporary Event Notice rules to obtain what is effectively a temporary music licence covering the Woolpack for the whole weekend. This includes the barn and beer garden and the whole of the Town Hall lay-by which will, as usual, be closed on the Saturday. This will allow us to expand the events in and around the Woolpack and in the adjoining barn to include not only folk sales stalls such as Hobgoblin Music, Talking Elephant Record, Thrift Music, etc., but to provide entertainment either in the barn or in the beer garden. We hope that this will be the hub of the outdoor entertainment on Sunday and help to promote the folk sales and craft stall in the Town Hall.
We have also used the TEN rules to enable us to hold the main Saturday evening barn dance at the Tenterden Club in Church Road, for which we have booked Tickled Pink who are one of the top barn dance bands on the folk scene. The club will be running the bar and providing both hot and cold food which can be ordered in advance. This is sure to be one of the most popular events at the Festival so you are advised to buy your tickets well in advance.
As a result of intense lobbying by many organisations and individuals, Morris dancing and similar traditional dancing is specifically exempt from the new licensing rules so there will be no shortage of dance sides around the town over the weekend. As well as the usual mix of Morris dancers, Appalachian dancers and Scottish dancers, we are very pleased that this year we will be joined by two young World Championship level Irish dancers, the “Kerry Colleens".
