An unusual opportunity to hear
June Tabor in performance with
brilliant box player Andy Cutting.
It has long been June's
ambition to put Andy in an accompanying role where he has the opportunity not
only to float serenely but also groove as only a Cutting can. And with Mark
Emerson providing the perfect balance, weaving in poignant piano and viola, the
result is... simply gorgeous. Much of the material is traditional, eg. April Morning, The Rigs of Rye, and is augmented with
songs from writers such as Lester Simpson, Maggie Holland, Les Barker, Robert
Burns and Geoffrey Chaucer.... and of course sublime tunes like Andy's History Man, and those haunting melodies
from Playford that 1651 do so well. She'll sing unaccompanied
too.

June Tabor’s beguiling new CD Apples is a typically striking
collection of traditional and contemporary song sung with the exquisite command
for which Tabor has become renowned over the past 30 years.
The accompanists
who contribute so much to the special musical atmosphere of Apples
are a trio with the collective identity of 1651, known for their Cast a Bell album (Beautiful Jo Records)
- accordionist Andy Cutting, violist and pianist Mark Emerson
and double bass player Tim Harries, all of whom have been heard on parts
of June’s previous albums, but not as they are here.
