1) Sony Award Winner

The Radio Ballad, The Song of Steel, broadcast on BBC Radio 2 back in December 2006, has won a Sony Radio Award 2007. Interviewer Vince Hunt talked to more than forty men and women who told him of hard shifts working alongside red-hot furnaces and of the humour and stoicism that enabled them to survive the world of the steel industry in areas such as Sheffield and Rotherham. Working under Musical Director John Tams, the songwriting team matched the tales with songs, some of which incorporate the workers' authentic dialect and slang. This remarkable programme featured musical contributions from a wide array of writers and performers, including John Tams, Kate Rusby, Ray Hearne, Julie Matthews and Coope, Boyes and Simpson.
