Folk Music at the Kings Theatre

For the first time ever the Kings Theatre in Southsea is introducing a Studio theatre, encapsulated in a specially adapted space for up to 120 people, and confined to the stage area itself. Stage 2 provides an opportunity for local groups and touring companies to perform pieces of drama, dance music and comedy in a unique studio space to 120 people.

Some of then unique highlights of this summer season are The News Guide Awards. This is your chance to see some of the very best in local folk music. Including performances from nominees Andy Broad and Slim Pickings, who this performance is extra special for, as it will be their last together and they plan to go out with a bang! Alongside them is are Folk award winners Amalthea;  two ladies whose lilting melodies and guitar/violin instrumentation bring to mind a less pop-oriented version of the Corrs and Helen Andrews' voice is easily Andrea's equal! In a set peppered with well chosen covers from bands such as the Dixie Chicks and Stevie Nicks, their strongest songs were their own compositions, including the Celtic sounding One Day and the more traditional White Horse Hill.

Folk music has a reputation, unwarranted of course, as being the realm of old men in Arran sweaters, smoking pipes and drinking real ale. If you come to the Kings Theatre expecting that then you will have your eyes widened by some of the best live music available in the area!

Tickets for this fantastic event being held on the 24th of June are £7 in advance and £8 on the door.

Following the celebration of local folk music is the sensational and timeless Julie Felix. A trailblazer for folk music in Britain, was the first folk artist to be signed to a major record label, she has performed a sell out gig at the Royal Albert Hall and had a regular slot on primetime television. Mixing her own songs with that of stars such as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, Julie Felix has established herself as one of the best folk singers in the country. What is sure to be a wonderful night of fun, excitement and terrific music, this performance is not to be missed.

Julie Felix is performing on the 20th of July, tickets are available at £9.50 in advance, and £10.50 on the door.

The Studio Theatre runs from the 24th of June until the 4th of August.
