Highlands and Islands Fisean Set to Host Distinctive Summer Music Festivals

This summer, two voluntary-run local organisations based in the Highlands and Islands are gearing up to host their own distinctive music festivals; one in the Outer Hebrides and the other on the banks of Loch Ness.  The line-ups include Wolfstone, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and folk legends Na h-ganaich.

The festivities kick-off in July when Western Isles-based Fis Bharraigh will present BarraFest: Live _at_ The Edge, whilst in August Fort Augustus-based Fis Ghleann Albainn will play host to NessFest an impressive weekend of music and magic. Both festivals are run by community volunteers, who are also involved in annual music-tuition fisean in their own area, supported by Fisean nan Gidheal. It is hoped that their festivals will celebrate traditional and folk music as well as encourage people to appreciate their surrounding environment.

Idyllically set on the Barra machair on the edge of the Altantic ocean, BarraFest will take the form of a 2-day music festival featuring both music from the island - local and traditional, plus some of the best known names in traditionally influenced music today. The festival will take place on Friday July 27th and Saturday July 28th, with the line up set to include the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Skerryvore, Box Club, Face The West, Four Good Men and the reforming for the occasion of Gaelic folk legends, Na h-ganaich.

Demand for the event, which the committee of Fis Bharraigh describes as the most westerly music festival in Scotland, has been so high that tickets for Saturday night have now sold out, but Friday night tickets are still available.

In the following month between the 3rd and 4th of August, the committee of Fis Ghleann Albainn will host their own festival set in the central Highland location of Fort Augustus.  NessFest, which promises to be a gem in the heart of the Highlands, will take place in the grounds of the former Fort Augustus Abbey on the banks of Loch Ness. The festival gets going on Friday night with Wolfstone and the Darien Project headlining the Big Top marquee. Saturday will host a showcase of up and coming performers, including all-girl band Sirens from Newcastle, and concluding with an evening of superb traditional music from Lau and Shooglenifty. Due to demand, tickets have now been released for both nights, in addition to the inclusive weekend tickets currently available.

The music will also be complemented by free music sessions, childrens theatre, art workshops and the all new 'Lochness Magic Challenge', a competition designed to celebrate and honor Scotland's tradition of magical expertise, where magicians will compete around the village for the festival goers vote.

The festival is being organised by a around a dozen volunteers from the area, hoping to attract around a thousand festival-goers to come and enjoy the experience in the heart of the Highlands.

Nicola Marshall, Fisean nan Gidheal Development Worker who works with local fisean said, "It is a remarkable achievement that two very popular and successful community-run groups from the fis movement have taken it upon themselves to join in the busy summer of festivals in the Highlands and Islands and run their own distinctive events. It is a great example of what can be achieved through community and voluntary work in the area, and is an admirable example of what can be accomplished in this, the year that Scotland Celebrates Highland Culture"

Tickets for both festivals can be purchased at www.thebooth.co.uk
