We have lots of great music on offer in the coming weeks, beginning with Vin Garbutt, one of the most popular acts on the circuit, at East Grinstead’s Chequer Mead Arts Centre next Monday, 4th June (a venue he says he’s looking forward to playing at again, after several years away).

And we’re delighted to have the excellent songwriter Anna Ryder (aka annA rydeR) as a support act – Anna is a fine singer and musician whose songs are consistently original and inventive (she has written for Fairport Convention, among others).

And if you can’t wait for any of these, why not get along to Haywards Heath’s 3 day family festival this weekend, when there are some great acoustic acts appearing tomorrow (Friday 1 June) such as Hummingbird (with Amy Wadge, Edwina Hayes, and Cathy Burton), Rosie Oddie (daughter of Bill Oddie), Steve Tilston, and the highly recommended Foy Vance. Or if you fancy something a bit heavier, there are some great local and regional rock bands playing on Saturday, with Sussex’s own The Feeling headlining.

Vin Garbutt is reputed to have said that he is not interested in becoming a big star in the accepted sense. Nevertheless in the area of music where he performs, there is no bigger star. He is one of the best known performers on the music scene today, and one of the most sought-after. It is no surprise. His song-writing is witty and powerful, tackling thought-provoking issues which others prefer to avoid, and he is an accomplished guitarist and fine whistle player.

Vin has been working non-stop since 1969, touring all over the world as well as playing in virtually every part of this "sceptred isle". Despite the years of performing, the songs always remain fresh and vibrant, and the repertoire is always changing. Vin is genuinely funny, and his quirky observations of life are always very much part of the act, delighting audiences everywhere.

“The diversity and controversial nature of his powerful, thought provoking self-penned songs performed with passion, integrity and a sincere belief in the subject matter earn him universal respect. Add to this his wealth of traditional songs, fun songs, fine musicianship, a zany rare wit, with introductions which could send his audiences "rolling in the aisles", and you have the ingredients for the perfect recipe for success.”
Folk on Tap

Special support for this show comes from Anna Ryder, a superb singer-songwriter and talented multi-instrumentalist whose songs are consistently original and inventive (she has written for Fairport Convention, among others). Her quirky, personal yet touching material and her wicked outlook on life together with her accomplished instrumental playing (guitar, keyboard, brass etc) has led people to compare her to Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell and others.

Recently nominated as Emerging Artist of the Year in the 2007 US Folk Alliance awards, 25 year old Anais Mitchell began writing songs at 17 and just 4 years later won the prestigious New Folk Award at the US Kerrville Festival

After spending time in Cuba, a semester in the Middle East and some unexpected touring with a rock project called ‘Circus Guy's Rock & Roll Revue’ Anaïs released her acclaimed second album, 'Hymns for the Exiled' (described by UK music specialists Fish Records as one of the most important singer/songwriter albums released since the mid 1990s). This stirring collection of guitar and voice cemented Mitchell's status as a singer-songwriter to watch, and the record eventually reached the ears of Ani DiFranco, who signed the artist to her label, Righteous Babe.

Anaïs is passionate about the music of her native land, from old-school country to dustbowl labour ballads to rebel rock. However, the time she's spent in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East has lent a worldly depth to her writing, which she presents to her audience with a graceful presence of spirit.

With a new CD release, ‘The Brightness’, just released in the UK, this should be the year that this intriguing singer songwriter gets the attention she so richly deserves.

Please note this show starts earlier than usual (7pm) as Anais is scheduled to play live on BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris later in the evening (just after midnight).

"A songwriter of startling clarity and depth, equally skilled at turning a melody or lyrical phrase into what you didn’t know you needed until you heard it.
Acoustic Guitar magazine

"Not since Bob Dylan's early years has a 23 year old songwriter had such power and meaning. Political and poetic, personal and universal, Anaïs Mitchell's work is my latest obsession."
Jonathan Byrd

Support or this show comes from US singer-songwriter and actress, Kristen Marie Holly, who has appeared in films such as Spiderman and recently won 'best actress' at the New York International Independent Film Festival.

Acclaimed as the best ever British jazz singer in a recent issue of America’s leading jazz publication, Jazz Times, and five times winner of the Best British Jazz vocalist awards, Sussex-based Claire Martin was born to sing. Growing up in a house full of music in Wimbledon, South London, she’d learned all of Judy Garland’s songs by the time she was 12. But it was hearing Ella Fitzgerald’s legendary Song Books that changed her life, inspiring her to go to Stage School and then to study singing in London and New York. She has been nominated once again for this year's BBC Jazz Awards in Best Vocalist category

Claire's latest CD, 'He Never Mentioned Love' is already being hailed as her finest album to date. Recalling the songs and spirit of the late and legendary Shirley Horn, the album features some of the hottest talent in UK jazz and captures the normally 'sassy' singer in intimate and mature mode. Claire was deeply affected and influenced by the technique, spirit and approach of Horn, and she describes the album as “A really heartfelt hour of remembering someone who I really love." Claire explains: "I wanted to do my own little tribute, because she has given me so much. She has taught me so much musically. I wanted to doff my cap and say fantastic, great, ideal. Although I’m not trying to copy her in any way."

“The best British jazz singer for a generation.“ Mojo magazine

“Talented and hip beyond her years… the most exciting jazz star to soar to my attention in a decade” New York Observer

This special show at Chequer Mead is presented in association with the theatre’s Cuisine Studio, which is hosting a new a series of Jazz Café evenings beginning on 30 May.

Part of the ‘nu folk’ scene, Sandi Thom has been compared to Janis Joplin and KT Tunstall and, according to the reams of press cuttings that accompanied her rise, was penniless and struggling until she secured a £1m deal with RCA Records by webcasting 21 gigs from her Tooting basement, leading to her hit single I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair).

Book early for this certain sell-out show.

Every new young female songwriter from 1970 onwards has been compared to Joni, but most of them are not fit to scrub her plectrum. Thom, however, has the potential.

Support for this show is from Brighton singer songwriter, Andy Walker – a name to watch!
