Assuming that the information below is correct, it seems that Greenwich Council, which owns the Tudor Barn (in Well Hall Pleasance, Eltham)  is likely to close the Tudor Barn building entirely and board it up.  This would be a remarkable act of irresponsibility.  It is possibly the finest medieval building left standing in South-East London.  If simply boarded up it will of course at once become a target for dossers and vandals, and sooner or later be burnt down.

I respectfully suggest you write to the council - and pass it on.

Dear SIrs

I understand that you are the owners of the Tudor Barn in Well Hall Pleasance.  It is at present run mostly as a pub.    It is possibly one of the finest medieval buildings still standing in South East London.  I am told that you plan to close it entirely and board it up.

That would be a remarkable act of irresponsibility.  As the experience of the Cutty Sark shows, it is hard to keep a facility that is not in constant use secure from vandalism.  If the Tudor Barn is simply boarded up it will of course at once become a target for dossers and vandals, and sooner or later be burnt down.  That would be a huge loss to the amentiy of the neighbourhood.

It is, in practical terms, essential that a sympathetic use is found for the building to preserve it for future generations.

I should be grateful to hear from you wth satisfactory assurances

Yours faithfully

.....   We are contacting Greenwich Council who own the building as to what their plans are. According to the manager they are just going to board it up, and if this happens it will go the same way as other buildings in the area which end up being vandalised. ...................... ICan you spread the word and I’ll keep you informed about further developments.

Just a note to say that next Wednesday 20th Feb will be the last night at the Tudor Barn as it is closing for good as a pub. We are looking for alternative venues in the area, and will keep you in the loop.
