Charlie Dore plus Megson

English Country-rock and North Country folk

Saturday 2 February 7.45pm

Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Charlie Dore, best-known for the huge 1980s international hit, Pilot of the Airwaves, is set to perform at the Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury on Saturday 2 February.

She will be performing with an acoustic-based trio featuring session musicians Graham Henderson (who has previously worked with Eddi Reader, Sharon Shannon) on Dobro, mandolin, flute, and Dudley Philips on upright double bass.

After quite a lengthy absence from both touring and recording, Charlie has made something of a comeback in the past two years. Following the 2005 release of Sleep All Day and Other Stories, her first new album in more than ten years, she put together a small acoustic band to play selected concerts. Enamoured by the support she received, Charlie set about producing Cuckoo Hill, her most recent album released last year.

Back making her own music, creating a genre that is original and entirely her own - Charlie Dore takes artistry to a whole new level.

Opening the show will be Teesside duo Megson. Debbie Palmer and Stu Hanna have this knack of writing contemporary folk songs that are inexplicably rooted in the folk tradition.

At the Gulbenkian Café Bar, traditional English fare will be on the menu before the show.

Editor’s notes

Charlie Dore

To coincide with this latest tour, Charlie has just completed a new album, xx.

Charlie Dore’s appeal as a creator of compelling material has been noticed at home and in America. More than 30 artists have cut her tunes (Tina Turner, Celine Dion, Lisa Stansfield, Jimmy Nail, Sheena Easton, Hayley Westernra, etc), and she’s also had songs featured in films, theatre, television shows, documentaries and special events. She composed the music for the TV series 2000 Acres of Sky and BBC drama Roman Road.

Megson

Debbie Palmer and Stu Hanna, alias Megson, have made great strides in their musical career since moving down south to London some seven or eight years ago. They first started making waves just over three years ago with their self-released debut album, ON THE SIDE. They not only gained praise in the music press, but also much-deserved radio play, especially from Bob Harris, who recently invited the young couple to play a live acoustic set on his popular BBC Radio 2 show.

Last summer Megson released SMOKE OF HOME their second full-length album, and however good everyone thought ON THE SIDE was, this new one shows a growing maturity in all areas, but most noticeably, the songwriting. Debbie and Stu have this knack of writing contemporary folk songs that are inexplicably rooted in the folk tradition. No mean feat for musicians still in their mid-twenties.
