Folk Song – Serious Fun

A workshop exploring how traditional songs (both familiar and unfamiliar) can be used in the classroom, projects, and performance. Content will include fun and easy examples of vocal warm ups; “Instant Results” songs that get people singing in harmony and rounds, very quickly; songs from the British Isles; and folk songs from around the world.

Folk song is a way of making children aware of their history, the history and cultures of others, and the role song can play in communities -- the joy people can get from making music together in everyday surroundings. The day will end with an informal jam session for anyone who would like to play, sing or just listen.

Led by David Oliver
David is a folk musician and music educator who worked for many years as a head teacher. He leads workshops in many aspects of folk music, song and dance, and provides in-service training, CPD, advice, information and resources for teachers. David is co-author of Folk Voiceworks and author of English Accordion Music, as well as a Ceilidh Band accordionist and caller. He is Chair of FolkArts England, and Director of Folkworks Summer Schools, Lecturer in Folk Music Education for Newcastle University and Durham University, and a trainer and mentor for Trinity Guidhall’s KS2 programme.

Singing Playgrounds (North Kent)

An introduction to innovative way of engaging children in singing as a natural part of their everyday life. Singing games are used to enable children themselves to become "Song Leaders" – older children who lead their peers in singing games in the playground. Singing begins with the guidance and encouragement of teachers and vocal tutors, and soon an oral tradition is fostered in the school. Activities focus on vocal skills development, musicianship, repertoire building and sharing, and PSHE development, leading to improvements in whole-school singing, confidence and concentration.

“I love being a song leader. When you have finished singing all the kids smile.” -Year 6 boy
