FRIDAY 4th JULY Dearman, Gammon & Harrison
Annie Dearman, Vic Gammon and Steve Harrison perform English traditional songs and tunes in a robust and firmly rooted English style, accompanied on various squeezeboxes, banjo and mouthorgan. Their repertory comes from traditional singers and instrumentalists; from folk song collectors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; from manuscript tune and song books , ballad sheets and songs they just happen to hear and like. Their CD Black Crow White Crow has had great reviews:
'This laid-back style serves the songs very well; there's breathing space here for the words and music to work their genial spell.... ' (Stirrings)

If you're interested in Irish storytelling and Irish drama, a unique play is coming to London for the first time. If you get a chance to go along to this you won't be disappointed.

The Tailor and Ansty is the true story of two people's simple lives in Gougane Barra, West Cork. The Tailor, Timothy Buckley, was a Seanchai, an Irish storyteller in the ancient tradition. As such, the evening is full of
wonderful stories of country life, its characters, history and song.
The production by The New Theatre, Dublin has Ronan Wilmot and Nuala Hayes as the eponymous couple. The New Theatre, Dublin, at the invitation of The Old Red Lion Theatre, London, presents the UK premiere of The Tailor and Ansty in the intimate setting of the renowned Islington auditorium. Nuala Hayes, who plays Ansty in the current production, is a leading light on the Irish storytelling scene.

The Tailor and Ansty were immortalised in Eric Cross's book, thereby incurring the fierce wrath of censorship from Church and State upon its publication in 1943. First performed in The Abbey Theatre, Dublin in 1967, The Tailor and Ansty has never been performed in Britain before, so this is a rare chance to see and hear a unique interpretation of Irish stories and to have a look into the history of Irish storytelling, literature and drama.
