Kent Musician Jack Castle Solo Album Released On Red Admiral Records

Url: http://www.redadmiralrecords.com

Jack Castle was bought up in the Tower Hamlets area of Dover, Kent.UK. He started playing at 16 on a white Rosetti guitar, which played like a barbed wire fence.

In 1961 Jack stood in with Dover’s original Rolling Stones playing rhythm guitar at the Strand Palais theatre in Deal.

In 1962, Jack joined Carl and the Invaders. And in 1967 his friend Mick Morris asked him to join Take Five. Mick had played lead for the Rolling Stones. The band was very successful, played all over Kent and also backed a number of big names, including Georgie Fame, Geno Washington, Eric Clapton and many more.

In 1971 Mick and Jack formed Mirkwood. They wanted to play progressive rock with double lead and complex vocal harmony. All material was to be original. Mirkwood backed bands like Supertramp, The Fortunes, Silver Head and The Moody Blues. Supertramp told therm they were one of best bands they’d seen!

In 1973 they made the Mirkwood album, original copies are still being traded for over £800.00. The original Mirkwood album has been digitally re-mastered and now available on CD from Red Admiral Records.

In 1987 Jack hit ‘The Line’ and made a life changing decision to leave Dover and Lecture at the University of the West of England in Bristol. He has regularly played live all over the West and Wales since, but never attempted to give up the day job.

Studying Van Halen, and Satriani during this period, he incorporated tapping and sweeping into his playing band developed a hybrid picking technique. Eventually retiring from lecturing Jack bought new recording equipment and over the next 5 years found time to make this album. The guitar techniques and history is fully described in the 12-page album booklet.

Tenterden Folk Festival 2008

Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th October

Full weekend tickets for Tenterden Folk Festival 2008 continue to sell well and are still available at £22.00 each (under 16s £11.00) until 1st September when the price goes up to £28.00 (£14.00).  We have also now released single event tickets for the Welcome Barn Dance on Friday evening and a mix of concerts throughout the weekend.  Tickets for the barn dance and each of the concerts are £8.00 (£5.00 under 16s).  Tickets are available by post direct from the Festival and will shortly be available from the Tourist Information Centre in Ashford (01233 629165) and the Library in Tenterden High Street.    A booking form is available on our website at www.tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk.

The Welcome Barn Dance on Friday evening and the special Sunday Afternoon Concert both take place in the Tenterden Club’s Moulton Hall and Evans Bar.  The Saddlery of the recently refurbished Marstons White Lion Hotel hosts the smaller and more intimate events including the Friday Evening Acoustic Concert, the Saturday Lunchtime Acoustic Concert, the Saturday Evening Concert and the ever popular Acoustic Folk Club on Sunday morning for which tickets are only £3.00 (under 16s £2.00).  Entry to the many workshops and met the guests events will be £3.00 payable on the door unless you have a full weekend ticket.  Of course all the events in the public bars of the White Lion, the Woolpack, the Woolpack Marquee and the Vine are free as are all the dance displays around the town and the procession.  Entry to the craft fair in the Town Hall and the Music Fayre in the Woolpack Barn are also free and there will be more stalls in the High Street as usual.  Donations put in our collecting buckets will however help to ensure the continuation of this popular event now in its 16th year.

The free bumper souvenir programme is now at the printers and we hope to have it finalised and on the streets by the beginning of September. In the programme you will find a short paragraph about each of this year’s festival guests including The Askew Sisters  (Sponsored by Hobgoblin Crawley), Jim Bainbridge (Scotland), Tony Carling, Pete Castle, The Claque (Barry Lister, Dave Lowry Sean O’Shea and Tom Addison), The Committee Band, Les Elvin, Doug Eunson and Sarah Matthews, Lisa Fitzgibbon and Jon Fletcher’s Power Folk Duo, Derek Gifford, Keith Kendrick, Moe Keast (Cornwall), Mawkin, Tom Moore and Archie Churchill-Moss (from New Roots 2008), One Sheet Short (are Keith and Derek), The Rattlaz, Chris Roche, The Simon Hopper Band (trio)and  Ticklish Allsorts Show.  Not forgetting the hard working regulars who we cannot do this without including John Barden, Marian Button, Peter Collins, Bob and Kathy Drage, Bo Foaks, Bob Kenward, The Marsh Warblers, Adrian O’, Andy Smythe and Travelling Folk.  There will also be over 30 Morris sides, Appalachian dancers, Scottish dancers, Flora, the Singleton Giant, Sandhurst Primary School Maypole dancers and Tenterden’s own dance group Feet Beats.

The diversity of the guest list is illustrated by the following extracts from the free souvenir programme;

THE POWER FOLK DUO are Lisa Fitzgibbon and Jon Fletcher.  Lisa is a UK based, Australian singer/songwriter and has been described as   is putting the power back into contemporary folk music.  Currently writing her fifth album, her sound is soft centred but hard core, Power Folk with a tender heart.  Lisa will be joined by Jon on guitar, mandolin and harmonica for their two sets at Tenterden.  Lisa has shared the stage with musical legends such as Arlo Gutherie, Roger McGuinn (from the Byrds), Chris Difford (from SQUEEZE), Eliza Carthy & The Waifs and played at prestigious venues such as the Shepherds Bush Empire, Glastonbury and Cambridge  festivals.

MOSS AND MOORE were one of the winners of the St Albans New Roots competition for young musicians in 2008 hence their appearance at Tenterden.  Tom Moore and Archie Churchill-Moss come from Norfolk and Somerset.  They have been working as a duo for 2 years playing at folk clubs and festivals as well as entering and winning competitions including the BBC Radio 2 Cambridge Folk Festival Young Musician’s Competition in both 2006 and 2007.  They have a passion for traditional and contemporary music from England, France and beyond, as well as their own compositions. Tom has been playing fiddle for 10 years and Archie melodeons for 5 years and they have developed a unique and mature musical style, which belies their youth (14) in their choice and arrangement of a variety of wonderful music.

More details of Tenterden Folk Festival 2008 guests, accommodation and camping are now being posted on our website at www.tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk.

FAREWELL LEAS GIG FOR BATTLESKA GALACTICA

BATTLESKA GALACTICA play their farwell gig at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone on Saturday September 6th which also doubles up as a CD release party!

The “That Is Really Allâ€ð show also features LOS SALVADORES, TAR and TWICE THE SIZE.

Energetic skacore act BATTLESKA GALACTICA have been one of the most popular Folkestone bands of the decade and previously released two albums: “Will Skank For Cashâ€ð (recorded at The Forum in Tunbridge Wells in 2002) and 2005’s “Songs From The Cryptâ€ð.

Once famously described as “the only band to operate a rotation systemâ€ð, there could well be one or two guest appearances from previous members on the night. The band will also be selling copies of their new six-track “If Found Please Return To …â€ð cd at the gig, priced just £3.

For further information, visit www.battleskagalactica.com

Maidstone-based LOS SALVADORES are a deranged experimental punk band with several festival dates amassed this summer. Formed in 2004, and signed up to Corndog Records in 2007, the band’s debut album “Attack of the Clonesâ€ð was released in February and, supported by a national tour, has so far sold close to 1,000 copies through HMV and other high street shops.

Blending blast beats with banjos, the energetic six-piece gigs extensively across the UK and is currently working on a new release at Out House Studios in Reading, where Enter Shikari recorded their gold-selling album.

For further information, visit www.lossalvadores.co.uk and www.myspace.com/lossalvadores

Ska punk band TAR supported BATTLESKA GALACTICA on their last highly successful gig at the Leas with Jesse James back in May 2006 and always supported Jester and More than Normal at the Leas in January 2005.

TWICE THE SIZE are seven booze-fuelled maniacs comin’ straight outta Brighton. They are an infectiously riotous bunch of merry-makers who deliver their own brand of party ska.

Tickets, priced £7 in advance or £8 on the door, are available from the Box Office on 01303 228600.
