Subject: FiTB - Karine Polwart concert to go ahead

Hi everyone
Last time I wrote I was just off to enjoy the wonders of Daarrzet, (just this side of Devon) and more particularly the annual Show of Hands summer festival at Abbotsbury Sub Tropical Gardens. Steve always gets the blame for any bad weather, whenever he sings Tall Ships it seems to prompt the clouds to open, and this year was no exception. It has to be said that Show of Hands fans must be the hardiest souls on the planet, how everyone sat there in the wind and rain for so long I have no idea. However it was still a fantastic day out and the bad weather couldn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, in fact just the opposite and at the end when everyone was up and dancing to Roots there was a fantastic if not dripping atmosphere. Great to see our own Tim Edey, Brendan Power and Lucy Randell there this year, they got a great reception, as well as Martha Tilston, Martin Simpson and one to look out for Ruarri Joseph.
In the last letter I mentioned a query over the Karine Polwart concert I can now confirm that this will go ahead, but at a different venue. Sadly I won’t be able to use the International Study Centre after the December gig due to a massive and unreasonable increase in hire charges. Fortunately the St Agnes Fountain concert was arranged so long ago that it won’t be affected by the changes and will go ahead as planned.
So I’m very happy to say that Karine will still be coming to Canterbury on Sunday 16th November as previously arranged but she will be playing at the Canterbury Steiner School Theatre.
This venue is a fully equipped cosy and atmospheric theatre set in the beautiful Steiner School grounds just off the Chartham Downs Road at Garlinge Green. According to the AA it is 5 miles from Canterbury Cathedral, 13 minutes drive. Imagine a theatre built in an Alpine Chalet and you’re nearly there, It’s almost like a giant log cabin and definitely meets the criteria for Folk in the Barn which is special concerts set in beautiful and interesting locations. There’s masses of free parking, a bar and most importantly sufficient loos!!! Tickets are now available to book for this and will be £15 for full price and £13 for concessions. Karine hasn’t played in this area before and living in Scotland, probably won’t be coming again for a while so make the most of this opportunity to see this rising star.

See www.myspace.com/karinepolwart for tracks and more info
"soul cleansing" (Q January 2008)

"takes the heart to places few singers even know exist" (WORD January 2008)
"grippingly understated storytelling" (THE TIMES, June 06)

I have to rush and get tea now and then get over to Whitstable Folk club for Wizz Jones, but more to follow very very soon...
Don’t forget next week is Broadstairs Folk week. Folk in the Barn favourite Cara Dillon is there plus our own Barber and Taylor, plus of course many more, too many to mention see www.broadstairsfolkweek.org.uk/ for full details. Seeya
