Ollie
Nicholls died suddenly in a tragic car accident in the early hours of
Sunday morning (30th March 2008)
Ollie was a
wonderful kind hearted man who touched so many lives. He was a supremely
talented singer/songwriter, musician, sound engineer, record producer and
comedy writer. He was at the hub of the local music scene.
He performed
with intense passion, belief, a glass of white wine by his side, and a wry
'Ollie' sense of humour, especially when introducing his songs! His
melodies were beautifully crafted, haunting and melancholic, but also
vibrant and bursting with melodic expression. His soft moving vocals
carried a warm endearing tone almost like a loud whisper, such was his
unique vocal style. Ollie's lyrics were honest, topical, often politically
edged, but in summary he sang about things that really meant something to
him.
A Review
'' Third on tonight’s bill is Ollie Nicholls. Ollie has been involved
with sound recording and production for some time now and mainly operates
from his DOZ Studios in Fordcombe but freelances as well. He has worked
with a large number of artists in just about every musical genre there is
including Bert Jansch, Clare Teal, Herbie Flowers, Jacqui Dankworth and
Tim van Eyken, and toured with world music outfit ‘Incantation’ during a
seven year period. Then again, he has also recorded the likes of Anita
Dobson and ‘Showaddywaddy’….(ssshhhh!) Ollie’s piano style and thought
provoking lyrics have attracted the interest of several punters and is
currently working on a new CD, which will be available soon''
Ollie was
integral to the local music scene that has been developing since the
emergence of The Grey Lady shows.at TunbridgeWells. He single-handedly
supervised the sound for the ‘Local & Live’ music festival on the
Pantiles. He also ran the sound at the Sevenoaks version of the show at
The Ship Theatre, Walthamstow Hall.
Ollie was a fanatical long
distance runner and run on average 50-60 miles per week! His other passion
in life was writing satirical observations under the pseudonym 'Hoss'. He
had established a sizeable mailing list for his 'Hoss Mail' which he would
send out on average once a fortnight. He was also a devoted Liverpool
Football Club fan.

My friendship
with Ollie stretches many years- we performed, socialised and worked
together. He produced and performed on both my albums. He wrote all the
arrangements for my band and I know he took great pride in those
arrangements as he did with all his work. I am honoured to have spent time
with him, and indebted to him for all his help, guidance and friendship.
He will live on in our hearts and memories for ever.
Our thought's
are with his family and I will finish this letter with some tributes that
were sent in from fellow friends and musicians.
Ollie, I can
still hear you calling everyone "sunshine". Thank you for the
encouragement and honesty you gave me and the enthusiasm you had for the
Grey Lady show. Your own music was enjoyed and admired by so many people,
myself very much included - the number of times I found myself walking
round the day after a show humming "In and Out"... I'm just in absolute
shock. Thinking of you. Ian
Ollie,
‘Twas a
wonderful thing you did'. Creating great music and helping the rest of us
create ours. Big Love from Jane Marie, Peter, Del, Bart and Jackie. xxx
Ollie,
I'm so
shocked and sad, still don't quite believe you've gone. I really cherish
knowing you for 9 years, and thank you for your sweet kindness and for
being a genius in the recording studio. As well as being the best sound
engineer ever you were such a gifted song writer and musician. I love your
songs, the words of 'Waterfall' are beautiful and prophetic-I'm so sorry
you have flown. Be in peace.
Love and
light, Helen
Ollie, you
were a great friend and a wonderful musician/singer-songwriter. I shall
treasure the memories of our last evening out forever and am glad the last
memory I have of you is of you smiling and laughing. I can't believe
you're not here anymore - and the world will be a poorer, duller and less
enjoyable place because of that. There is an Ollie shaped hole in a great
many friend's lives - you will be missed but not forgotten and your music
will live on. I miss you mate and I'm sorry I never even got to say
goodbye to you before you walked home. Be at peace. Chris
