Hazel O’Connor with Cormac De Barra

Beyond Breaking Glass

Tuesday 11 November 7.45pm

Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury

Breaking back - the phenomenal autobiographical show....

“The show was the highlight of The Edinburgh Festival” The Scotsman

Even if you’ve never heard of Hazel O’Connor, the show, the songs, the voice, the melody of Cormac De Barra’s intuitive harp, plus her humorous, and sometimes poignant, autobiographical storytelling, will touch your soul - just as it has done to theatre audiences worldwide.

Fresh from the Edinburgh Festival and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show, which spawned a beautiful album of the same name, Hazel and Cormac are bringing an updated script to the Gulbenkian offering you a rare opportunity to see this “Unique and unforgettable” (The Scotsman) performance.

Eighties icon Hazel O'Connor takes us on an emotional journey, in words and music, from her childhood, through her early triumphs and tribulations right up to the present day. Her candid and moving account details the highs and lows of a career that had her catapulted to stardom thanks to her starring role in the film 'Breaking Glass'.  Hazel O'Connor became a punk icon as a result of her performance as Kate, a fictitious rock star on whom the film was based.   The success of 'Breaking Glass' didn't stop there; Hazel won a variety club award for Best Actress and two BAFTA nominations for Best Newcomer and Best Film Score.

“O’Connor is a pro – unpretentious, good-humoured and relaxed…the expressive power of her singing, her songwriting craft and warm, strong personality…Cormac De Barra’s expert playing of the Irish Harp…” The Times
