2009

3 JAN: DUCK SOUP - Dan Quinn, Ian Kearey and Adam Bushell (former members of the Oyster Band, Gas Mark 5 and other bands) perform songs and tunes on various instruments.

10 JAN: VICKI SWAN and JONNY DYER are a talented young duo, who perform traditional songs and tunes on small pipes, flute, guitar, nyckelharpa, accordion and double bass.

17 JAN: The KLEZMER KLUB is a popular band (sometimes five-piece, sometimes six-piece) playing traditional Jewish music and songs.

24 JAN: ROY BAILEY is a popular singer of political and personal songs; he’s also Tony Benn’s favourite singer, and they sometimes do shows together.

31 JAN: DAMIEN BARBER and MIKE WILSON - singing concertina player from Norfolk (and leader of the Demon Barbers) and the youngest member of the Wilson Family join forces.

7 FEB: JEFF DAVIS is a fine and well respected US singer of traditional American songs; he also plays various instruments and has a very dry wit.

14 FEB: ROBIN GILLAN and DONNIE SCOTT – fiddler and guitarist who are well regarded on the old-time scene in the UK perform old-time American songs.

21 FEB : RAY FISHER + support: DI HENDERSON – Ray, a great Scottish singer of mainly traditional songs, returns after long illness, supported by a strong singer from Tyneside.

28 FEB: LEON ROSSELSON is simply one of Britain’s greatest songwriters. Many of his songs have been covered by other performers – The World Turned Upside Down by Billy Bragg, Dick Gaughan and many others, for example.

7 MAR: REUBEN’S TRAIN are idiosyncratic singers of American songs, with guitar. They’re not quite like any other duo or group; they walk a fine line between the dramatic and the comic.

14 MAR**: NORMA WATERSON, MARTIN CARTHY and CHRIS PARKINSON are great singers and players. NB: £9/£8 TONIGHT; £1 OFF FOR UNWAGED.

21 MAR: RON TAYLOR and JEFF GILLETT sing mainly traditional English songs, most with guitar. Ron is a particularly fine singer, and was one of the founder member of the Songwainers. Jeff is a skillful guitarist and a good singer.

28 MAR: NOTTS ALLIANCE perform a varied repertoire – traditional, contemporary, serious and otherwise - in excellent three-part harmony.

4 APRIL: ROSIE STEWART is a fine and feisty singer from Ulster, and very highly regarded on the Irish trad scene; she sings mainly traditional songs.

25 APR: SARA GREY and KIERON MEANS are a family duo from the States (though Sara has lived in Britain for many years now). They do old-time American songs on banjo and guitar.

2 MAY: BILL CADDICK is the writer of Unicorns, Eights and Aces, Stay on the Line, King Sun, Queen Moon, and many other fine songs; he sings with guitar.

9 MAY: MAGGIE BOYLE and GARY BOYLE are not related. Maggie, a London-Irish singer and flautist, and a member of the trio Grace Notes, sings mainly traditional songs. Gary is a fine guitarist.

16 MAY: TRIO THRELFALL – Jane and Amanda Threlfall and Roger Edwards perform mainly traditional English songs, with concertina and guitars.

30 MAY: JEREMY TAYLOR – not obviously political, Jeremy was banned by the apartheid regime in South Africa, where he had been brought up. He was extremely popular in Britain and the UK in the 70s and 80s with his comic and serious songs, such as Jobsworth and Red Velvet Steering Wheel-Covered Driver, but later returned to South Africa. He now lives in France.

6 JUNE: ROB MASON and SIMON PRAGER – Rob is widely regarded as the best blues harmonica player in the UK; Simon is a fine guitarist who sings blues and music hall songs.

13 JUNE: BESKDY is a popular band that performs songs and music from eastern Europe. The songs are provided by Joanna Foster, who is also an actress who has appeared in various TV shows.

The club is then closed for the summer; we will re-open on 5th September.
