Crystal Antlers

One such band hotly tipped for great things in the coming year is these guys. You may have already heard the murmurs about Crystal Antlers - this "f**king great band from America". They're young, raw, innovative, talented, and absolutely amazing live. Normally we politely direct people to check out the band's MySpace and think about going to the gig – but this week I'm forcing you all to go and see them!

Plan B like them too; “A blast furnace, ravenously reducing psych garage via their sheer sound and fury.” And NME also have some kind words, for now; “If you hear anything more exciting this year, you’re lying.”

Skint & Demoralised

Skint and Demoralised began when 17-year-old Matt Abbott dialed into the world of spoken word performance poetry. Performing short sets at local indie gigs he labels himself 'unorthodox and uncouth', and he's being touted as Mike Skinner's successor.

Esser

Anyone who heard 'Headlock' last Autumn probably still has it going round their heads now, and with a couple more great singles lined up for 2009 we reckon Esser could well be the man of this particular year.

Red Light Company

Having played a 'rocking' set at Leeds and Reading this year it's well worth keep your mascara'd eye on these guys. Most recently spotted supporting Editors and then the Pigeon Detectives on tour, this should give you a good idea of what to expect.

White Lies

White Lies purvey the sort of big music U2 and The Waterboys cut their teeth on. Some of their songs hark back to the epic anthems of Scouse-rockers Echo & The Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes (singer McVeigh sounds uncannily Julian Cope-ish). Or maybe they're closer to those early 80s groups like Tears for Fears who took the forbidding goth rock of Joy Division and turned it into commercial, brightened-up chart pop.

Vice Presents...The Soft Pack

Vice magazine have their finger on the pulse and the Soft Pack are their current tip, so get along to this gig and hopefully see history in the making.

Festinho

Having been to one or two festivals in our time we wanted to recommend one that people might not have heard of - it's our hotly tipped festival for 2009!

Festinho is a boutique outdoor music festival held in the heart of the beautiful Suffolk countryside showcasing an eclectic mix of new and established music and creative talent from the UK and Brazil. This intimate event may be small but there’s a whole lot of stuff going on with art exhibition areas, the infamous Disco Shed, Body and Soul healing zone, BBQs, a range of workshops in samba, capoeira and percussion, as well as fancy dress, family camping and a play area for kids and, best of all, cream teas! If you get time you could also listen to some fantastic live bands.

The Wurzels

Hailing from Somerset, we reckon this band will blow up in 2009. Either of their anthemic singles, 'Combine Harvester' and 'I'm a Cider Drinker', could easily have challenged that girl off the telly's version of 'Hallelujah' for Christmas number 1, had they only been out in time.
