============
The legendary American fingerstyle guitarist Duck Baker will be playing at the Players Theatre in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, on Saturday, 4th April. Duck is a master of many musical styles, including “Celtic”, jazz, ragtime, blues, swing and “old-time” guitar – and is rare in the guitar world that he plays both steel string and nylon string guitars with equal facility. Details of the concert and a resume of Duck’s career, with box-office details for (snailmail), and PayPal details (for electronic payments), can be found at:

www.mjra.net/WillFly/dbconcert.shtml

The support act is duo Mike Ainscough & Ian Chisholm - and tickets for the event are £8 each.

DrBoKarma introduces Helen McCookerybook for Second Sunday, Feb 8th

Sunday February 8th 2009 ~ from 2.00pm ~ Blackboys Inn

Poetry and Rhyme’ is Helen’s second solo album, following the much acclaimed ‘Suburban Pastoral’ (2006). These days Helen, “a posh lady Chuck Berry”, is concocting some delicious bossa-folk, seasoned with the occasional twang of rockabilly. Once upon a time, Helen was a punk, forming The Chefs in Brighton in 1978. They were favourites of John Peel and had an indie hit with the song '24 Hours'. Helen’s book 'The Lost Women of Rock Music' is published by Ashgate Press and features interviews with The Slits, The Raincoats, the Mo-dettes and others.
DrBo says: “Helen’s must be some of the warmest and most reassuring early-style rock’n’roll around – I can’t imagine anyone else making a big old Gretsch sound so friendly. We’re really looking forward to this one.”

Sunday afternoon March 08            DrBo welcomes Kirsty Almeida

DrBo says: “Kirsty’s presently recording her first solo album. Her writing is thoughtful, original, and has a smooth, sometimes latin-jazz, thing going on; while as a performer she can find several gears: salsa-fiery, tender bluesy and boogie-bop funny.

Subject: What's On in Horsham Area

The Horsham Folk Club programme is at www.horshamfolkclub.co.uk but here is an extract for the next two weeks:

Sunday 1st February  The Miserable Rich
The Miserable Rich are an exceptional, young band from Brighton. The band consists of Will Calderbank (cello), Mike Siddell (violin), Jim Briffett (guitar), Rhys Lovell unknown instruments and James de Malplaquet probably vocals. (Their website could be more informative.)
In less than two years these musicians are already creating a big name for themselves. They will appear at Horsham following their successful tour of Germany, a live appearance with Marc Riley on BBC Radio 6 Music and a number of gigs around the UK.

The Mainly Ceilidh Dance Club now meets on the second Friday of each month.  Next dance: lucky Friday 13th February.

Best wishes

John Byng
