Drums of Korea

Friday 30 January 7.45pm

Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury

The rhythms and sounds of Korea will burst onto the Gulbenkian stage in Canterbury at the end of this month, as Korean drummers, Dulsori make a unique appearance.

Dulsori, meaning ‘heartbeat of the land’, was formed in 1984 to rekindle the spirit of ancient Korean traditional festivals. Dulsori’s performances aim to build harmony and unity between the audience members and performers, creating a sense of community.

Dulsori take the Korean percussive style known as pungmul to a whole new level. They use kkwaenggwari (small handheld gong), janggu (hourglass drum), buk (barrel drum), jing (gong) and numerous other percussion instruments to create a dynamic and inspirational sound.

“Their pace never lets up. It’s a gripping performance of delicious percussion, crashing drums and rabble-rousing vocals.” The Guardian

The Company

Dulsori (literally ‘ heartbeat of the land ’ ), formed in 1984, primarily aims to rekindle the spirit of ancient festival sharing the inner-energy through the art form that can enrich our life. Festival is the place where everyone’s energy mingles together creating a sense of pleasure in a collective manner. Dulsori can never reach this dream alone and that’s why we always invite the audience to join the show.

The fundamental basis of our creative work is a Korean percussion play. Since the beginning of Dulsori, we have tried many different kinds of performances based on the traditional rhythm of Korea. As a result, we have developed unique performances and interactive programs. We believe that creating a sense of community is important in any cultures.

Our performances and interactive programs attempt to build harmony and unity of community among the audience members and performers.

Our energetic and passionate team has staged hundreds of international performances and recently toured Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Israel, Africa and across Europe. We also conduct workshops, classes and camps on Korean traditional arts and are open to all age groups.

Dulsori brings you such an experience of overwhelming togetherness. Dulsori’s performance taps into intrinsic human emotions of hatred, fear and fury and translates them into a highly amazing energy. Through singing and dancing along with the powerful sound of drum, the show warms your heart filling it with joy. Dulsori will let you experience the true fever of the ancient festival.
