Subject: Folk Development Survey

We would be grateful if you would spare 5 -10 minutes of your time to complete the attached survey.
There are only 14 simple questions which would help us to develop support services for people working in folk music in England.
To get to the survey click on the link above for more detailed background of the reasons behind the survey read on.
As you are aware for the last four years Folk Arts England (FAE) have been funded by Arts Council England, to deliver a wide range of services to the folk music sector.
In November last year FAE decided that they would like to focus their resources on a number of strategic projects and not continue as an Arts Council regularly funded organisation after March 2009. The Arts Council is supportive of FAE's decision and is allocating funds in 2009/10 towards the organisation's work in:
  • The delivery of the FAE Conference and training work in 2009
  • The development of the programme in 2010
  • Research into the possibility of making Direct Roots accessible on line.
The Arts Council recognises the valuable contribution that Steve Heap, the board and staff of FAE have made to raising the profile of the sector through the FAE Conference, campaigning work and the production of Direct Roots. The Arts Council is committed to supporting the development of folk music in England to ensure that the legacy of the work instigated by FAE continues.
In 2009-11 the Arts Council has allocated a budget of £200K per annum to support the development of folk music in England and is now working with the support of  FAE to research the needs of the folk music sector in order to establish how it can best be supported in the future.
The first stage of this process is the attached questionnaire which asks a few basic questions to identify your main priorities around:
  • Information and networking services
  • Campaigning and sectoral profile
  • Professional development
  • Sectoral development projects
The questionnaire should take no more than 5 -10 minutes to complete. All responses will be treated in confidence and responses made anonymous in the analysis process.
The deadline for your responses is Friday 6th March.
In the second stage, should you choose to select the option, we might contact you to discuss your feedback in more detail in a short interview (no longer than 20 minutes).
In the third stage we will use your responses to inform a number of discussion groups involving a cross section of:
  • Managers and agents
  • Artists
  • Promoters
  • Labels
  • Festivals and venues
This group will be nominated by Music Officers in each of the regions and representatives of FAE.
We will feedback the results of the findings in November 2009.
Please feel free to pass this questionnaire onto any associates, members of your organisation or artists you are working with.
Thank you in advance for your time.
