Bluegrass….UK

At the beginning of March, the band Contraband - of which Richard Holland is a part - held a free concert at Littleton Village Hall, The Hallway, Littleton, near Winchester, Hampshire - in aid of the Red & White Appeal. The evening raised a healthy £704.63p for the appeal launched by Southampton Hospital Charity, to raise £2.2 million to create the transplant treatment centre of choice for teenage and adult patients with leukaemia and other blood disorders from Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands. The Appeal is named 'Red and White' in recognition of the particular importance of red and white blood cells for haematology patients. Contraband has been in existence since the early eighties; it evolved from a straight “hard-core” bluegrass band via a number of other influences (country, blues and acoustic folk) to its current rootsy approach to the music. Well known in the South of England, it is based in the Southampton area. For more information, please contact Richard on 01962 886581 or email him via r_dot_l_dot_holland_at_btinternet_dot_com

Richard also says the monthly pick that meets at the Golden Lion Pub, Alresford, on the last Tuesday of the month (next one is Tuesday 28th April) is proving a resounding success. For information on the monthly picks - please email r_dot_l_dot_holland_at_btinternet_dot_com

There is a new session being held at the Bugle Pub - The High Street, Botley, Hampshire - on the first Tuesday of the month - organised by Kaj Warming. For more details please contact Kaj via kajwarming_at_hotmail_dot_com

The excellent musical partnership of Laura Boosinger and Josh Goforth has brought forth festival offers which should make it possible for them to return to the UK in August/September. Taube Marks kindly emailed “Good news. Our monthly Bluegrass meeting at the Duke of Monmouth is set to resume in April, as usual, on the last Thursdasy of the month. Simon (the banjo) and Joyce (JDT) Gibbard were able to talk with the new publican, Thomas,
last week . He seemed keen that we should continue meeting at the Duke as
usual. I understand that Thomas is Swiss and that he is hoping to provide good food at
the pub, reviving the policy of meals that was rather sorely missed in the last
couple of months. The pub is schedules to reopen on the first of April and if you want to support the pub, what better way than to stop by for something to eat soon (or before the session begins).” Please email Taube via
taube_dot_marks_at_lang_dot_ox_dot_ac_dot_uk for more details.

There are 4 sessions a month in the Ipswich area which are:- 1st Tue - Hadleigh George, 2nd Tue - White Horse Tatingstone 3rd Tue - Swan Stratford, Last Tue - Orwell Crossing A14. All are welcome, any more information please call Chris Hockley on 07889607612”

Thanks to Nigel Canter for advising me of a Bluegrass and Americana Session running on the last Friday of every month at the Victoria Inn (‘Knights in the Bottom‘), Chickerell, near Weymouth. Nigel says that the session kicks off at about 8.00 p.m…..and - please note: you don't have to be a 'stunning' Bluegrass musician, just enthusiastic and keen to learn or impart. The pub is on the left as you travel out of Chickerell towards Portesham on the B3157.

Pat McGarvey of Southern Tenant Folk Union emailed “ Break A Leg! - the old showbusiness maxim comes true...Yes, you've guessed it one of the band recently managed to break two bones in his leg whilst playing football...and that man is our normally football crazy Double Bass player Matt Lloyd...It was about two weeks ago and I think the match he was playing was also something to do with the Comic Relief fundraising day...so it was all for a good cause...no doubt that makes him feel alot better about it all... Seriously though this does mean that Matt can't make any of the gigs in April/May (my little brother John will be 'standing' in for him) which is a real shame and he'll be missed if for no other reason that we won't be able to find out how much he doesn't like the various meals we'll be eating together...that and the lack of his G-Star Raw fashion victim trainers will make the van a quieter and more contemplative place to be... So Matt's doing better now some time has passed - he's had an operation to insert some pins in his leg bones and some kindof nut/bolt looking thing...and he's out of the hospital so he'll be recuperating at home for a few more weeks before he can get out and about... If you'd like to send a get-well-soon message or just some general abuse about his beloved Chelsea FC then his email address is mattelloyd_at_hotmail_dot_com

Upcoming gigs for Southern Tenant Folk Union (in various forms) include;

April 5th - Soul Survivor _at_ Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh - Roddy & Pat playing as a fiddle/banjo duo (something they'll be doing in Scotland from time to time) supporting Blueflint.

Rick also kindly emailed to say that St Julian’s Club in Kent is putting on regular bluegrass and old-time music again, on the first Friday each month; most evenings will be open sessions hosted by the Kent Carters – musicians are always welcome. Rick also adds that a few special nights are coming up:

May 1 – St Julian’s annual tribute to the late Brian ‘Fuzz’ Townend, whose music teaching at Sevenoaks School grounded so many people in the basics of bluegrass, folk, skiffle and jazz, on guitar, double bass, piano, comb and paper etc.. Look out for a big variety of musical styles on this night!

July 3 – The club’s contribution to the Sevenoaks Festival fortnight is a special appearance by London band Foghorn Leghorn, who went down a storm on their last visit some years ago.

August 31 (bank holiday Monday) is St Julian’s annual ‘Kentucky to Kent UK’ festival, which this year features especially - long-time friend Lilly Drumeva. Lilly lived and performed in the UK for some years; as well as being one of Europe's principal performing stars she does much behind-the-scenes work for the bluegrass scene, in particular liaising with the International Bluegrass Music Association's board in America. She has recorded many albums, solo and with her band 'Lilly of the West' who, in 1998, won the EBMA's best bluegrass band award, going on to showcase in the USA. She has worked with many of the world's top bluegrass artistes, including Marshall Wilborn and Jesse Brock of the Lynn Morris Band, who invited her to sing with them at a time when Lynn herself was unable to perform. In addition to her regular appearances she presents regular music shows on TV and radio in Bulgaria, and we are looking forward to hearing her sing again at St Julian’s.

2009 SE Area Bluegrass/Old-Time Festival dates:

April 9-10 Bluegrass-Plus Club – the Grasshoppers + artistes to be announced

August 1-2 Surrey Mini Bluegrass Festival - Chris Moreton, The Off Chords, Howard Burton, Wood, Wire, & Words, High Weald Ridge, Buffalo

August 31 Kentucky to Kent UKLilly Drumeva + artistes to be announced

September 11-13 Sweet Sunny South Festival - Carl Jones & Beverly Smith, The Kittyhawks, Robin Gillan

Each year, I hear great reports about the Coastline Bluegrass Music Event - and it appears that this year will be no exception! On behalf of the committee, Phil Mann email emailed “The Coastline Bluegrass Music Event is in it's 4th year, located on a beautiful working hill farm near LLandudno Junction in North Wales, just 1.5 miles from Junction 19 on the A55. Nearest railway stations are Llandudno Junction or Colwyn Bay. Camping facilities for tents, caravans and motorhomes (no electric hook-up) include an on-site caterer, an excellent fully stocked bar selling ‘real ale’ and fine toilet facilities including disabled, and 'hot' showers. We have an experienced team of stewards to assist with vehicle access etc. and our reception staff are on hand to provide all the information you'll need for a great weekend of Bluegrass music. We have a designated 'quiet area' if you don't fancy staying up for the many late night jam sessions. There are fantastic views across the Conwy Estuary from the campsite, and the sunsets can be truly breathtaking. Ticket prices have been held at 2008 rates and start at £35 for a full weekend including camping and admission to all concerts and workshops. Children under 16 are admission free if accompanied by a paying adult. Detailed ticket prices and contact information can be found on the website www.coastlinebluegrass.co.uk . Dogs are allowed, but must be on a lead at all times. CBME is an ideal event for families, and we encourage youngsters to learn to play with our 'Young Bluegrasser's' concert, and extended workshops. You can win a Martin guitar in the raffle too. The bands performing this year are '4 Wheel Drive' from the Netherlands, 'Toy Hearts', 'Chill Until Blue' and 'Jaywalkers'. Appalachian dance groups appearing will be 'Feet First' and 'Wicked Soles'.” Judging by the excellent feedback on the previous music happenings - it would be advisable to book as soon as possible to be ensured of a fun filled Bluegrass weekend.

Sara Grey wonders if there would be any interest in a weekend old time session at the Taybank Hotel in Dunkeld next June. She thinks it would be a good idea to have a nice cosy session up in Scotland....as there aren't many of those up in the wilds….and the Taybank is a great music venue. If there is enough interest she will discuss the matter with the Taybank landlord. There are lots of B&B's in the Dunkeld area - and probably plenty of camping, so Sara considers that it would be a good way for people to combine the weekend with a holiday. She points out that this would definitely not be a festival...just a weekend session. If you are interested in finding out more email her at sara_at_saragrey_dot_net

There will be banjo tutors from the land of 5-string banjos - namely America. - NEW! - There will be a mandolin workshop. - Also NEW! - The attendance fee will not be for individual workshops but for the whole event. This means that you can choose as many workshops as you want and learn many new things on whichever instrument you choose! "It's my best attempt at not being too shallow," laughs The Infamous Stringdusters' Jeremy Garrett when you ask him about his first solo project, but don't take him at his word. Indeed, it doesn't take more than a moment's worth of listening to I Am A Stranger for anyone to realize that the young singer, songwriter and fiddler has accomplished much more than that. Debuting on March 31st as a Sugar Hill Records digital-only release, the album serves up a healthy portion of cutting edge bluegrass along with a few curves that will leave even the most jaded listener satisfied with the project's depth. Like bandmate Andy Hall, whose Sound Of The Slide Guitar earned the IBMA's Instrumental Album of the Year title in 2008, Garrett highlights his Stringdusters’ bandmates on a tasty selection of material while leaving plenty of room for contributions by a carefully chosen assortment of friends and colleagues who just happen to be among bluegrass and country's finest. "Honestly, the musicians were as big a part as the songs were," he says. "I envisioned how each song would go with particular musicians in mind, and there were songs I wanted to do but didn't because the musicians weren't right, and others that I added because the musicians fit them so well--like Julie Elkins on banjo, whom I've played with since we both lived out west, or Shawn Lane, who's one of the best mandolin players on the planet." For those already familiar with his career, the breadth, substance and spirit that pervade the set will come as no surprise. After moving to Nashville some seven years ago, Garrett swiftly ascended into the ranks of the city's busiest musicians, serving stints with Chris Jones and Ronnie Bowman while filling in with legends like Bobby Osborne before launching the Stringdusters with a group of like-minded colleagues. The group quickly jumped into the forefront of a bluegrass youth revolution with the release of ‘Fork In The Road’ (2007), earning the IBMA's Emerging Artist, Album and Song of the Year honors from the International Bluegrass Music Association for its compelling vocals--many featuring Garrett's wailing tenor--instrumental brilliance, engaging song choices and blend of taut, hard-driving precision with loose, funky jams. Grabbing a brief time-out from a hectic tour schedule, the group went back into the studio to produce last year's follow-up, ‘The Infamous Stringdusters‘, and then hit the road again. "This one became a super-intense passion for me," Garrett says, as he recalls working on his own album in between 'dusters tours. "Somehow holes opened up, and we recorded for a total of about five days, and wrapped it up at the beginning of December. By that point, I'd been concentrating on it so hard that I just took a break from it - but you know," he adds, "I listened to it again for the first time in a while not long ago, and I thought it sounded pretty decent." To which it only needs to be added, don't take his word on that either; whether a bluegrass, Americana or just plain good music fan, any listener will find that I Am A Stranger is one enduring introduction to the full breadth of one of the scene's brightest talents. Check out www.garrettgrass.com for more information.

Since forming five years ago, Spring Creek has emerged as the hottest young band among the newest generation of pickers in the Rocky Mountain bluegrass scene. In 2007, the Lyons, Colorado-based foursome rocketed onto the national stage when they became the only group to ever capture the band competitions at the Telluride and RockyGrass Festivals in the same year. Since those celebrated wins, the band has toured extensively, solidifying their status as lively and skillful performers. Spring Creek signed with Rebel Records last fall and will be unveiling their label debut, Way Up on a Mountain on May 5th. Way Up on a Mountain projects a sound that derives its inspiration from the soul of the Rocky Mountains but maintains its footing in the Appalachian hills and piedmont of the bluegrass heartland. Drawing from the same creative wellspring that produced traditional bluegrass bands such as Hot Rize and Open Road, the album bursts with a freshness that is guaranteed to earn Spring Creek a spot among Colorado's bluegrass innovators. Equally, Way Up on a Mountain demonstrates the band's keen mastery of traditional bluegrass and their deep respect for its Appalachian origins. The resulting product is a sound that is both traditional and original, daring yet indebted to the forefathers of bluegrass. Way Up on a Mountain is certain to win the hearts of listeners in the bluegrass heartland as well as those of the genre's ever-broadening fan-base worldwide. Please check out http://springcreekbluegrassband.com/ for more information about Spring Creek.

Folk….here & there

The Yorkshire Wolds village of North Dalton will be celebrating its history on Thursday 9th April when it launches its reminiscence CD “Looking Back” . After 3 years of recording of the voices of eight local residents who have lived in the village for all or most of their lives this fascinating CD takes listeners back as far as the 1920’s. It paints a picture in words, of a time when the village was so different to today. No electricity. No running water or flush toilets. A life of work on the land, or of service to the community. The locals tell us about the village when it had three shops, two pubs, tailors, blacksmiths, cobblers and even two chapels. They remember the village in wartime, with the arrival of allied troops from Dunkirk , evacuees, and the ‘Free French’. They take us back to their schooldays in the village, to the annual steam-fair, and many other features of those far-off days. The idea for the project came from Chris Wade , a Director of the Beverley Folk Festival, which commissioned the CD, with funding from the East Riding’s Leader Plus. Ray Williams , a resident of the village, gathered together the “stars” of the show to talk about their memories of life in the village. The CD will be launched at North Dalton Village Hall on Thursday 9th April at 7.30pm. All those involved in its production will be present to answer questions. Copies of the CD will be on sale for £8.00 each. Refreshments available. Further details from: Chris Wade at the Festival Office 01377 217569.

Do try to get a copy of the UK’s Haley Sisters fine new release - Vicissitude - (it means ‘the fact of being variable‘). Although considered as among the UK’s favourite country/roots performers, Jo-Ann & Becky - superbly supported by Becky’s husband, Brian Smith, - are amazingly underrated in terms of their qualities as first class vocalists and entertainers. These British gems should have been given star status years ago. Listen to their music - and see them entertain an audience at the following venues/events

Maverick’s Radio Hour, along with more country music webspaces…

www.maverick-country.comwww.myspace.com/maverick_country

With everyone going crazy for these technological advancements there are many new additions to the country music society on the web. Maverick Magazine now has it’s space on www.nessmp3.com and www.digitalrodeo.com – both of these are fantastic interactive websites where you will find many new and amazing country talents – so please join up and say hi! There is a Maverick hour on www.ukcountryradio.com with Bob Preedy in the style of the podcasts playing some of the best artists featured in this month’s Maverick. So make sure you give it a listen the fourth Friday of each month at 8.00pm. The Maverick Myspace is also still getting bigger and bigger every day so if you haven’t dropped by to say hi, please do. The magazine team love to hear from their friendly subscribers and to hear your opinions of the magazine. They have over a 1100 friends on there now – many of them artists featured in the magazine who’d also love to hear from you…

Maverick Magazine reports that Country Thunder Records is the latest Nashville label to go up in a cloud of smoke, leaving artists Heartland, Bluefield plus, newcomers Shawn Hammonds and duo Burns & Poe (featuring Keith Burns, formerly of Trick Pony) - all high and dry. Label President Herb Graham stated that he did a review of where the record business is now and what the trends are, and decided the numbers just didn't add up to keep going. He will continue Country Thunder's management and publishing activities. Country Thunder joins record companies Equity, Montage and Midas, all of which had the plug pulled within the last six months.

Thanks to Rob Ellen for sending details of the Po’Girl upcoming UK tour - in case you‘ve missed them previously, theirs is an eclectic yet harmonious blend of jazz, Americana/roots string music with a dash of European folk….that creates a pretty tasty musical dish!

In the April 6th edition - Billy Ray Cyrus talks with Country Weekly Magazine about family, his new album - and returning to Tennessee to shoot Hannah Montana: The Movie with his daughter, Miley. Billy Ray Cyrus notes that his new CD, Back to Tennessee, and the movie came at a good time for him, as he was longing to get back to Nashville and record some new songs. “I don’t spend near enough time in Tennessee,” says Billy Ray, who owns property outside of Nashville but lives mainly in southern California, “I wanted to go in and make some music and be real.” In the business for almost twenty years, the Grammy nominated artiste - from Flatwood, Kentucky - has more than proved his worth as a fine songwriter, musician, vocalist - and actor. Feeling it was now time to make another musical statement, he built time into his already hectic schedule and returned to Tennessee to dedicate himself to the creation of this new album. Back to Tennessee is an excellent, 14 track inspired eleventh album of hard-hitting songs, that also includes a couple of numbers featuring Miley Cyrus. The CD certainly won’t disappoint any dedicated BRC fans - and should definitely draw in a host of new ones - many of whom probably will know him as the real life - and on screen father of Miley Cyrus - alias Hannah Montana. Totally grounded, the multi-platinum selling Billy Ray Cyrus remains a true, honest ‘country’ performer who has found his way Back To Tennessee. The CD is available on the Hollywood Records Label - catalogue number 699 1222 www.hollywoodrecords.go.com/lyricstreetrecords/ www.myspace.com/billyraycyrus
