GUILLERMO AND RIOPLATENSES

"A route to the roots" Contemporary Argentine music

Versatile Argentine vocalist-guitarist Guillermo joins forces with two of Uk's top Latin musicians, Javier Fioramonti (bass), Andres Ticino (perc). A powerful, evocative, refined take on contemporary songs from Argentina, Uruguay and beyond...

“Argentine singer with a remarkable voice…exquisitely performed South American song”

 J Griffiths, The Guardian

"Catch a Latin vibe without a Latin cliche in sight"Jazz UK

Everybody has heard Argentine Tango, but very little is known about Argentinas - and South Americas - other music. Guillermos repertoire combines Amerindian rhythms such as chacarera and huayno from Argentina, candombe from Uruguay, lando from Afro-Peru and Brazilian samba and baiao with elements of jazz improvisation. Guillermo Rozenthuler is a versatile vocalist, guitarist and composer. He leads Rioplatenses, a band featuring some of UKs top Latin musicians. They appear regularly across the UK, performing Guillermos original compositions and a distinctive take on traditional South American folk song. Some of their recent performance highlights include WOMAD, BBC World On Your Street, Diaspora Music Village Festival and London South Bank.

NORIG QUINTET

DEBUT UK PERFOMANCE

DIRECT FROM FRANCE

Four amazing musicians from various backgrounds featuring Sébastien Giniaux: solo guitar, Joris Viquesnel: rhythm guitar, Florin Gugulica: clarinet, Jérémie Arranger: double bass, lead by Norig’s evocative and haunting Gypsy vocals. Presenting their first album, GADJI (Gypsy word for non-gypsies) that’s musically inspired and influenced by Balkan traditions, tango and baroques with Manouche Gypsy vocals.

Norig with her Celtic name and Catalan origins sings in Romanian, Romani, and is equally at ease with the Balkan repertoire – which has enthralled and captured the heart of such names as Tony Gatlif who unexpectedly appointed her to work on the soundtrack of his film "Exils". Norig’s powerful voice, ranges from that of a child’s to a woman in her prime, at its best live on stage, bathed in the spotlight, she is free to show the full intensity of her talent and underscore the  beauty of Gypsy music. With her proud manner and a voice that thrills, her ballads evoke an aroma of drama that echoes of carousing and feasts, Norig, embraced by the Gypsies whose attention she captivates like spellbound children, is already a leading figure in the Gypsy tradition. A one night special not to be missed!

Myrddin (guitar), Robbe Kieckens (percussion), Dajo De Cauter (double bass)

Myrddin is the youngest son of famous multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Koen De Cauter. As a youth he learned clarinet from his talented father (mainly jazz and Gysy style). Then at fourteen he discovered flamenco guitar and was hooked by the richness and originality of this musical culture. Whilst staying in Spain he studied with some of the greatest names of flamenco: Manolo Sanlucar, Gerardo Nuñez and others mastering a phenomenal technical virtuosity. Captured by the depth, variety and influences of this music he created his original and unique style of contemporary flamenco. As a solo artist he released his first Cd Imre in 2001 (Culture Records) and became a household name in the world of flamenco in Belgium and Holland. In 2005 he released his second album Novar (Munich Records) and he is currently working on a third album. Evan Christopher DJANGO A LA CREOLE Quartet

Headed up by one of the worlds best Clarinettists - Evan Christopher

Christopher whilst living in Paris, worked diligently to raise awareness about the

musical culture of New Orleans where he lived until the floods, through concerts and

masterclasses. He also formed his own groups, the Jazz Traditions Project and Django à

la Créole. For Django à la Créole, the idea was simple enough: Spice up the Hot Club texture

pioneered by Django Reinhardt by emphasizing hallmarks of New Orleans Jazz including blues,

rhythms of the monde Créole, and collective improvisation. The quartet released the recent

"Django à la Créole" CD in New Orleans during the 25th anniversary of the famous French

Quarter Festival. Elegant and impassioned, New Orleans-based clarinettist Evan Christopher's

style is steeped in the tradition exemplified by early jazz masters such as Sidney Bechet, Jimmie

Noon and Barney Bigard. Together with UK based guitarists David Blenkhorn & Dave Kelbie,

and bassist Sebastien Girardot, the quartet celebrates the music of the legendary Django

Reinhardt and enlivens swing-era classics with fresh interpretations and virtuosic

improvisations. This concert will be a fine blend of Hot Club and Creole just what it says on

the box! not to be missed. We advise booking as early as possible.
