The Francophone in Kent

Bonjour,

Did you know that the French-speaking community is very active in Kent?

Each term, members of the Francophone community get together for a pique-nique, a fair or other social events.  Most recently we organised a medieval banquet with more than 150 guests. Photos of some of these events are posted on www.petite-ecole-kentoise.co.uk/beyond-the-classroom.html and there are more on http://www.m2sherman.com/~nathalie/learn-french-in-maidstone/lespetitslapins.htm.

In 2007 we created Saturday morning classes for our youngsters, to help further their knowledge of the French language, but also discover the culture of French-speaking countries around the world, while participating in enjoyable activities with children of the same age.

Three Saturday morning schools exist at the moment (Maidstone, Harrietsham, Hildenborough). More classes will start in Dartford in April 2009 (La Marelle www.lamarelle.org.uk)  and there are some projects in Folkestone andWhitstable info_at_petite-ecole-kentoise_dot_co_dot_uk . Some of these schools offer evening craft activities during the week.

Parents in Kent are also collaborating with a state school to establish multilingual classes in which lessons across the curriculum would be taught in French, German or Spanish (not all at the same time).

I nearly forgot; we meet quite often in a restaurant in the evening, or for a coffee during the week.

If you want to know more about all the activities and future projects all over Kent, just register by e-mail. We will add your name to the list and send you an e-mail once a term. richard_dot_dakin_at_yahoo_dot_fr, 01622 728 661
