RTÉ NSO Announces Principal Conductor
The Kazakh conductor Alan Buribayev has been announced as the Principal Conductor Designate of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Born in 1979, Buribayev studied at the Kazakh State Conservatory and the University of Music, Vienna. He will conduct two concerts in the 2009–2010 series (including a new work by Jennifer Walshe on 7 May 2010) and will take up his three-year post as Principal Conductor in September 2010. Buribayev succeeds Gerhard Markson, who was Principal Conductor from 2001 until this year. www.rte.ie/performinggroups

Crash Ensemble Internship
Crash Ensemble have started a two-season part-time administrative internship with the aims of training people in arts administation, and also educating people with regards to production management in classical/contemporary music. The internship will be unpaid, though there will be a performance based bonus at the end. Duties will include (but are not limited to): office documentation management; accounting data entry; online marketing and web-presence maintenance; library (score and audio); general office admin; research projects (recording industry, international promotions, international taxes and visas, etc.); education workshop logistics and management; competitions and invitations management; and production. The internship will be part time (two and a half days a week), though some flexibility with respect to hours will be requested. The internship will run from September 2009 to June 2010. Applications will be accepted up until 5:00pm on 12 June 2009 with interviews in the last week of June. For more information on the internship and to apply please contact admin_at_crashensemble_dot_com

Contemporary Music Centre Launches CD
Aodán Ó Dubhghaill, Head of RTÉ lyric fm, officially launched the latest Contemporary Music Centre promotional CD at the CMC on Tuesday, 19 May. Featured on the latest CD, which is eighth volume in the series, are works by Kevin Volans, Andrew Hamilton, John Kinsella, Elaine Agnew, Deirdre McKay, Frank Lyons, Gerald Barry, Anne-Marie O’Farrell, Jennifer Walshe, Jürgen Simpson and Martin O’Leary. Performances are by, among others, the Dublin Guitar Quartet, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the Fidelio Trio, Deirdre O'Leary and Apartment House. The CD is available free of charge from the CMC. www.cmc.ie

Young Musicwide Award 
Music Network have announced details of this year’s Young Musicwide Award, which is aimed at young chamber ensembles this year. The programme will assist an ensemble over a three-year period by providing performance opportunities, publicity support, assistance with the production of a CD and masterclass opportunities. Previous recipients of the award, which rotates around young jazz, classical and traditional groups from year to year, have included Trihornophone, the Callino Quartet and Fidil. The selection will be made through an audition process in September. The closing dates for applications is Monday, 6 July. www.musicnetwork.ie

 

Cello Meeting Ireland
The Donegal Chamber Music Society is presenting the first Cello Meeting Ireland on 19–21 June. Based at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny, the weekend will feature masterclasses by the Romanian cellist Mihai Dancila as well as chamber music masterclasses. donegalchambermusic.blogspot.com

Northern Ireland Assembly Committee
The Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Culture, Arts and Leisure will be holding a public meeting at the Waterways Ireland Headquarters, Enniskillen, Co. Masters in Traditional Irish Music for Cello
The American cellist Liz Davis Maxfield, who recently graduated from Berklee College of Music, Boston, has been granted a Fulbright Scholarship to undertake the Masters in Traditional Irish Music Performance degree programme. She hopes to write and publish a method book on adapting traditional Irish fiddle and guitar styles for cello. www.lizdavismaxfield.com

Young Musicians' Award
The National Concert Hall's Young Musicians' Award has been awarded to the seventeen-year-old violinist Patrick Rafter from Kilkenny. The prize of €8,000 will be used towards the purchase of a violin. David Tobin, aged thirteen, won a runner-up award of €2,000. www.nch.ie
