Just Over the Next Hill...

Woody... there, where Woody is pointing - there is some good music playing, and maybe in your neighborhood. Lots of folks are going to see Bob Dylan this summer - he's doing another barnstorming tour of minor league ball parks, a "Major League Triple-Header" as the Hartford Courant called it, with John Cougar Mellencamp and Willie Nelson. In Allentown they called it a "rumbling, rolling convoy" of 11 tractor trailers, 10 buses and 115 people. Bob

OK, it's not a folksinger in a VW Microbus (been there, done that), not what you call an inimate show, but it's Bob, the one-and-only. Reports are that all three acts step up to the plate and swing hard. We don't usually promote "mainstream" media events, but this is iconic American music. The tour is in New England this weekend, heading south and then west, true rolling thunder.

New and Notable

Electric Dirt (Dirt Farmer Music/Vanguard Records) is the second album in the last two years from Levon Helm: Electric DirtLevon Helm. Its predecessor, Dirt Farmer, his first solo LP in a quarter century, followed Levon’s near-miraculous recovery from throat cancer, and as such represented a new lease on life for the legendary artist, who rose to prominence as the drummer and vocalist for Levon and the Hawks, which later became The Band.

George StraitBig stars like George Strait should be helping us out, rather than the other way around, but this is a pretty good platter. George co-produced this thirteen-track disc with legendary producer Tony Brown, Strait proves again why he has sold over 67 million albums throughout his record-breaking career. Twang, Strait’s 38th album, was recorded at Shrimpboat Sound Studio in Key West, FL.

Is life sweet, or what? Buy this CD, George gets a new hat...

Tip O'the Week for players and fans:
Erin McKeown

We got an email from from Massachusetts folk-rocker Erin McKeown, announcing a series of houseconcerts, with a twist. She's webcasting the shows using a new service, ustream.tv. The service allows anyone with a webcam and a mic to broadcast live "TV" from wherever to everywhere!!! She is selling tickets on her website and sending ticket holders the URL and a password just before the show to give them access.

There's one this weekend, on the 16th, you might want to check it out, this is pretty cutting edge stuff. If it really works it could be the "next big thing" in power-to-the-people, go around the gatekeeper, grassroots arts-making. (Artists- let us know if you have a "cutting edge" event planned, we'll spread the word.)
