Dear
Friends and New Subscribers.....
Welcome to a New Year and a
decade that will no doubt see the Folk Arts enter into a Golden Era. Those
of you who were with The Magpie's Nest at the Royal
Festival Hall over NYE will know full well that folk has definitely taken
centre stage. 2010 already has some major treats in store, read on to find
out more.
STOP PRESS: THE MAGPIE'S NEST WIN 2010 BBC
FOLK CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD!!!
We are bowled over and
honoured to announce that we will receive this coveted decoration at
February's ceremony. We would of course like to thank YOU the audiences
that have supported us over the last 4 years to make it all possible, plus
of course, the artists that played, our mums and dads that made the beds
up for said artists, and all our helpers and
volunteers.
THE MAGPIE'S NEST
COLLECTIVE:
The Magpie's Nest has evolved, so here is a
short answer to clarify who, what, where and when.
Giving a whole
new meaning to the term 'divide and conquer', we, Joe Buirski and Sam Lee,
are presenting our own nights in 2010; Folklahoma and
Two for Joy. This way we can bring you more folk in more
venues, at more festivals and at other strange and wonderful events. The
Magpie's Nest itself is not an event but the umbrella under which we
operate.
Joe's Two for Joy will be resident in both our original
home The Old Queen's Head and Passing
Clouds, and Sam's Folklahoma has found a new home in London
Field's new venue The New Empowering Church (a warehouse
not a church!). As well as both of us putting on occasional gigs at other
venues across London. Folklahoma will be hosting concerts this spring at
Kingsplace, The Southbank Centre and 3 new monthly 'Emerging Artists'
showcase nights at Cecil Sharp House from May onwards.
We're going
to be tweaking the The Magpie's Nest website and mailing list in the near
future to reflect this expansion and to bring you more news about more
folk. Stay tuned for all the news as it happens.
Thanks again
people for supporting Live Music!
Sam & Joe

Show of the Year ***
WHOOP-ASS CAJUN MUSIC HITS
LONDON SARAH SAVOY AND THE FRANCADIANS Wednesday
20th January The New Empowering Church 1a Westgate Street E8
5RL £8, 8pm tickets
here

It is with great pleasure that we host a show for
Sarah Savoy and the Francadians. We managed to grab a show with the band
in London before they zoom off headlining all sorts of places round the
world, and this is set to be a great night of authentic Cajun Music -
which has long been on The Magpie's Nest want
list.
Here's what the experts
say:
"The Cajun
music tradition is one of the most protected species in American roots
music, a heritage handed down through generations and along the branches
of the family tree. It was therefore something of a given that Sarah Savoy
would follow the family trade—Pop is Marc Savoy, the eminent musician and
the leading accordion maker in Louisiana, while Mom is Ann Savoy, another
acclaimed musician and the author of Cajun Music: A Reflection of a
People. Not that young Sarah is merely the current caretaker of a
trapped-in-amber tradition. Although her band is undeniably a Cajun outfit
(plenty of mournful fiddle and wheezing accordion), she also occasionally
injects her sound with the twang of Western swing and the strut of
rockabilly. The result is a winning lesson in how to freshen up a
tradition while keeping a firm grasp of its roots.

*** Second Show of the Year!
*** LAST WEDNESDAY IN JANUARY (27th) MUNDO JAZZ + PARIS The Old
Queen's Head 44 Essex Road, N1 8LN £6 Advance/£8
OTD, 8 - 11:30pm tickets

What can one say about a band
whose songs convey the dangers of environmental degradation, the
importance of racial harmony and the inherent evils of capitalism with
subtlety and intelligence? One can say they are called Neil Young and
Crazy Horse. Mundo Jazz, however, preach peace, love and understanding
with all the subtlety of a brick hitting butter, through their
ridiculously catchy songs, awful dancing and thunderously crass
philosophizing.
A beautifully subtle satire on the
likes of Bono and Bob Geldof, Mundo Jazz are also superb musical and comic
improvisers, frequently creating songs on the spot and veering off into
spontaneous chaos. Worried about your carbon footprint? Don’t bother, you
can buy one of theirs after the show…
