 The Magpie's Nest

Dear Friends and New Subscribers.....

It was a momentous occasion for us on Monday last week when we headed over to The Brewery near the Barbican to pick up the BBC Radio 2 Best Folk Club 2010 award. After a mere four years (it's our 4th Birthday in March) promoting folk gigs, it's humbling to have been acknowledged by such an institution - now keep 6Music on the air!

However, the most poignant part of our speech was in thanking YOU, the people who have attended, who open and read these emails, and have supported the work we've done over the last fours - and who continue to do so. It really has been the most inspiring and rewarding four years, and it is great to have contributed to getting our Folk music onto the cultural map in new ways.

South by South West - Sam and Joe are both attending SxSW as part of the delegation showcasing English Folk at this years event  (17 - 22nd March) . Organised by British Underground, the event is called "Looking For A New England".

The Magpie's Nest on Tour MAY 2010 - watch this space! We're flying the coop and coming to a city near you. We're touring two great bands The Long Notes and Plaster of Paris, with support from a top selection of Local Acts who've played for us down here. All dates announced in March. (if you want to host a show, email us).

Fay Hield After a year or two off the folk radar, during which she researched her PhD thesis and discovered motherhood (one of each) and self-sufficiency (an allotment), Fay returned to public view via occasional performances with partner Jon Boden. By this time she and Jon had fetched up on the moorland fringes of Sheffield. In 2009 a new concert line-up with Rob Harbron (English Acoustic Collective) and Sam Sweeney (Bellowhead) came into being, built around a striking repertoire of often obscure material drawn from rarely-thumbed collections. This spicy stew of songs and ballads, catches and caprices is showcased on her debut solo CD - Looking Glass, due for release in 2010 on the prestigious Topic Records.
