Subject: TWILIGHT FOLK NEWS FEB 2010-EMILY PORTMAN and PHILLIP HENRY LIVE

THE POGUE TRADERS AT ORANGE STREET

Hi people,
Thanks to all who attended the POGUE TRADERS/RELIG ORAN gig on saturday night-I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! A huge crowd were treated to a fantastic warm up from local chaps RELIG ORAN, whose lively tunes set the mood, followed by two sets of POGUES classics by the incredible tribute act THE POGUE TRADERS....I thought they played them all, but apparently they still could have played more, but were held back by having to finish at 11.... I cant wait until next time-thankyou to Shane Mcgowan and the rest of the POGUES for writing the songs in the first place!

'From the first moment I heard Emily sing, I knew that she was special. She is beautiful and charming, and with her love of the tradition and her well-chosen songs, she graces the English folk scene.'
Shirley Collins

Emily Portman is a singer, writer and concertina player, commended by Shirley Collins, with a BBC folk award nomination for her work with harmony trio The Devil’s Interval and frequent airplay on BBC radio. As well as annually touring with Waterson:Carthy, Emily performs with her band Rubus and recently appeared at Saddlers Wells and The South Bank Centre with Lauren McCormick. Emily is fast making waves beyond the folk scene, being featured as a soloist on the BBC's adaptation of 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' as well as appearing on alt folk songster’s Alasdair Roberts’ forthcoming album. Less well known are her original compositions: these visceral visions of a darker Albion conjure landscapes where mythical sirens collide in urban backstreets. Inspired by folktales and ballads, Emily weaves harmony-rich narratives relaying female experience, accompanied by viola player Lucy Farrell (fresh from touring with The Unthanks) and harpist Rachel Newton of BBC folk Award Nominees The Shee. BBC Radio 3’s ‘Late Junction’, and ‘Words & Music’ have already caught wind of Emily’s new songs, airing her compositions even before their official release. Emily is currently performing to sell-out crowds in the North East and her debut album ‘The Glamoury’ will be released Spring 2010.

With support from
JO LEPINE (THE OWL SERVICE)
 and NAOMY

JO LEPINE-
"I sing mostly English and scots ballads with excursions into French-Canadian and early music territories. I have performed with the Grand Union Orchestra as guest vocalist on their Dr Carnival tour. I have been part of The Owl Service for almost 2 years now and love it! Our debut album 'A Garland of Song' was released on Southern Records in 2008 and the next is underway. I'm planning an album of my own later this year..."  www.myspace.com/jolepine

NAOMY-
Naomy has performed before at the club, and has sang at many folk clubs and singarounds, both locally and further afield-popular for her beautiful singing style, she also played cello on Robb Johnsons last album, and has guested on the upcoming OWL SERVICE project, "THE PATTERN BENEATH THE PLOUGH".
