Achieving great art for everyone: a consultation

Hello

Firstly may I introduce myself to you. I am the new Director of Arts Council England, South East. I would like to invite you to take part in an important consultation which aims to identify the future priorities for the arts.

The arts have flourished in the last 15 years, and there is now a genuine acceptance that they are part of our fabric as a nation. We want to build on that strength, but in our constantly changing environment, we need to work together to achieve the very best for the arts and opportunities to engage.

Earlier this month we launched our consultation - Achieving great art for everyone – which sets out Arts Council England’s understanding of the current landscape, celebrates the success of the arts and identifies areas for the development over the next ten years

We want to hear your thoughts on the way forward. Your views will inform our long term strategic framework and our next set of investment decisions.

To take part in the consultation, please visit www.artscouncil.org.uk/consultation

The consultation will close on 14 April 2010.

We look forward to hearing your views - thank you for your contribution in advance.

Sally Abbott

Director, South East

NEWS

Performing Englishness in New English Folk Music and Dance

Performing Englishness in New English Folk Music and Dance was a two-year research project at the University of Sunderland, running from September 2007 to August 2009 and supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The project investigates the recent resurgence of an interest in English folk music and dance. It questioned the ways in which Englishness is articulated within these genres, and considers the contemporary assertion of an English traditional identity within global, European and British contexts.

The research has three main objectives. Firstly, it examines the characteristics of this wave of English folk. Secondly it looks in detail at the particular kinds of ‘Englishness’ that are being circulated when people ‘do’ English folk, whether as participants, performers, audiences or promoters. This has been done mainly through participant observation at English folk festivals. Thirdly it examines why this wave of interest is happening now, and how it might relate to wider shifts in national identity.

The research focuses on three key areas:
• English folk music acts (from individuals such as Tim Van Eyken and Chris Wood to big bands such as Bellowhead)
• Young morris and rapper dance sides and companies (such as Morris Offspring and Smutt Rapper)
• Folk festivals and festival-based participatory activities (including ceilidh dancing and youth-orientated workshops).

Apple Day needs your creativity

dates - 21 October  2010

Apple Day needs your creativity, contact a local Apple Day organiser to see if they need your help, or organise an event yourself. Organisers might be growers, local authorities, museums, schools, restaurants, shops, galleries, Community Orchards needing orchard seats, sculptures, plays, songs, drawings, poetry, processions, posters, puppet shows, banners, apple beasts, badges, T shirts, bags, labels for new juices/ciders, games and customs, recipe book illustration, exhibitions, online galleries, films and videos.

Apple Day links our apples with their orchards, nature with culture. Common Ground’s aim was to initiate a new calendar custom – to enjoin everyone to help invent a tradition to bring the fruits and the orchards back into our cultural lives and everyday landscapes.  All Fruits Eve and Apple Day (ancient traditions began as the sun set) are coming of age and we need everyone’s imagination to help celebrate in style.  Contact:  info_at_commonground_dot_org_dot_uk

FUNDING STREAMS

OCVA - Creation Grant

area - Oxfordshire

deadline - Monday 15 February 2010

Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action (OCVA) is able to offer small grants of up to £500 to voluntary and community groups in Oxfordshire. This funding is largely due to the generosity of Creation Theatre, who donated the proceeds of one of their performances to OCVA for this purpose. The total amount available is around £7,500. A panel of OCVA Trustees will meet to decide on the award of the grants.

Any voluntary or community group active in Oxfordshire can apply, not just those involved in Theatre and the Arts. You do not need to be registered but you should be constituted. It does not matter how long your group has been in existence or what your annual income is. However, given the size of the grants, they are more likely to be awarded to groups with little or no income. You will need a bank account with two signatories that the grant can be paid into.

Grants can be for activities, or materials and equipment that will help your group deliver its aims. The application can be for a new activity or for continuing an existing, successful activity. It can be an emergency payment that will help solve an urgent difficulty. You will need to explain how the grant will make a difference to people.

Application forms and guidelines can be downloaded from the Oxnet website www.oxnet.org.uk/creation-grant-offer. If you need help to complete the form, please contact the OCVA Development Team on 01865 251946.

Community Celebrations

deadline - 5 March 2010

Legacy Trust UK have made up to £4 million of funding available for this programme, which provides an opportunity to create a high profile celebration in your area.

Many people associate the Olympics with sport alone. However, the Olympic values look to blend sport with culture and education, and a sense of celebration. They are therefore looking to support the best five community celebrations that identify a moment that deserves enhancing – a chance to do something spectacular, extraordinary and innovative.

Successful projects will allow communities to come together to host large scale outdoor celebrations at moments of local significance. This could mean celebrating moments of national importance, media relevance, Olympic inspired or of sporting or cultural significance.
