Scientists discover link between singing and stroke recovery

As anyone who sings in a group or choir will tell you, the physical and mental benefits of singing are plentiful. Now scientists have discovered that teaching stroke patients to sing can actually help ‘rewireÂ’ their brains. By singing, patients use a different area of the brain from the one used during ordinary speech.

Dr Nina Kraus, a neuroscientist from Northwestern University in Chicago, says that insights into how the brain responds to music also provide evidence that musical training is an important part of children's education. You can read the full article at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8526699.stm

Arts face funding cuts of ‘as much as 20%’, warn local authorities

Local authority leaders have warned that financial support for the arts across the UK is threatened with cuts of as much as 20% from 2011 to 2014.

A new report, After the Downturn, which was written by the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, envisages reductions of between 7.5% and 15% in public spending in the 2011-14 spending round. It also suggests that ring-fencing areas such as health and education may result in cuts of 20% or more to some “unprotected servicesâ€ð, which include arts and culture expenditure.

The National Association of Local Government Arts Officers (nalgao) will survey local authority arts officers in March about their budgets for this year and their expectations for the future. The results will be published later this spring.

Concertina Charitable Trust

Concertina makes grants to charitable bodies which provide musical entertainment and related activities for the elderly. This not only brightens up their lives, but also provides a therapeutic benefit to their health and well-being.

Concertina is keen to support smaller organisations which might otherwise find it difficult to gain funding. Since its inception in 2004, it has made grants to a wide range of charitable organisations nationwide in England and Wales. These include funds to many care homes for the elderly to provide musical entertainment for their residents.
