The George in South Molton on Saturday 20th March.

Will Kaufman will be presenting his multi-media musical documentary Woody Guthrie: Hard Times and Hard Travellin’.  This highly acclaimed show sets the songs of Woody Guthrie in the context of 1930s’ America – the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music itself.  Will’s rendition of songs from Guthrie and others, buttressed by detailed historical commentary, exemplify the blending of music and radical politics that marks Guthrie’s most powerful and evocative work.  Will Kaufman is from New Jersey, and has been a semi-professional singer and musician for over thirty years, being equally at home on guitar, fiddle, banjo or mandolin.

Tickets are £6 in advance (£5 to Shammick Acoustic members) and are available direct from The George Hotel or online from www.wegottickets/event/59007, or £7 at the

door.

Michi Mathias is running the London Marathon and raising money for a small charity for disabled people in Lewes, Sussex.  Some of you have been asking her for this info, so here it is for those interested.

The Oyster Project is a group of people with various disabilities who organise things they want to do or learn or get involved in, whether it's working on an allotment,
watercolour painting, cooking, IT skills, going for wheelchair-accessible walks, seeing films, setting up an internet radio station, camping.... whatever the members want to find a way to do.  It's fairly new and not very well-known yet, but Michi has been going to their drop-in cafe once a week and am really impressed with the energy and creativity.  It's all being done with little money and a great deal of volunteer effort, so anything she can raise for them will go a long way.

the month and possibly tying in with one of the major folk festivals. He teaches a wide variety of traditional dance forms including flatfoot, square and social and can teach at all levels. If anyone can suggest/organise a suitable opportunity for him to teach then contact him - sgreen_at_greentechnology_dot_com

Hunter Robertson will be playing and teaching clawhammer banjo at the Sweet Sunny South Festival in Hastings next September (Sept. 10-12, 2010) and is looking for gigs around it. He'll also be in the UK and Ireland in April, and a gig then too would be a helpful.

Music Weeks in Spain

Following the wonderfully successful and fabulously fun old-time music weeks in Andalucia of the past three years, Kate Lissauer is pleased to announce that Spainmusic Old-Time weeks (La Fuente de Musica!) are happening again, as follows:
Saturday through Saturday, April 24-May 1, 2010
Sunday through Sunday, May 2-9, 2010
Saturday through Saturday, September 25-October 2, 2010

Dave Bing will be our leader for each of the first two weeks, teaching fiddle and banjo along with his faithful assistant Kate Lissauer, OR, if enrollment is sufficient, he will be joined by his brother Tim Bing.

Beverly Smith and Carl Jones will return for the autumn week

It would help greatly in the planning if people enroll early.  Return participants in particular should let Kate know of their intentions as soon as possible.

The residential weeks are held in a beautiful and remote part of mountainous southeastern Spain, near the village of El Fonte, Sorbas, an hour’s drive north of Almeria.  The site is self-contained, all meals are provided and rooms are shared with one or two other people.  Double rooms for couples are available.  Non-playing spouses, friends and family members are welcome but they must charge the same fee to everyone.  £475 per person, £240 per child 14 or under, and £375 for participants who are camping on site.  There is plenty to do in the area and nearby, including sightseeing in the national park, visits to beaches, rock climbing, hill walking, and visits to Granada or other places of cultural interest.  (Although they have found in the past that no one particularly wants to go anywhere else once they have arrived!)  Room, full board, tuition and
use of all facilities, including a 20-meter swimming pool, are included in the price.  Participants must provide their own transportation, and Kate can help and advise with that, and can arrange transport from Almeria airport, which can normally be shared with other participants.

A deposit of £100 will secure a place on the course.

For more information, please email Kate Lissauer: kate_at_katelissauer_dot_com
