Mike Heron & Georgia
Seddon
Singer-songwriter Mike Heron was a founding
member (with Robin Williamson) of the legendary Incredible String Band
who produced over 14 seminal albums and appeared at the famous Woodstock
Festival in 1969. Their acclaimed album 'Hangman's Beautiful Daughter'
propelled them into the Top 5 of the British charts behind the Beatles, Cream
and the Rolling Stones.
Fledg’ling reissues of the ISB
back-catalogue are featured in a double page spread in the April issue of
UNCUT (attached) - “global campfire music from an expanded consciousness, with
a religiously heightened perception of the world. No studio tricks, no
electrification, just a knapsack full of of exotic instruments, a bardic level
of inspiration and a ragged theatricality.”
Mike's solo album in 1971
'Smiling Men With Bad Reputations' featured a stellar cast from the
aristocracy of folk-pop-rock musicians, including Pete Townshend, Richard
Thompson, Elton John, Jimmy Page, Steve Winwood, Keith Moon, Dave Pegg and
Ronnie Lane.
Since the Incredible String Band's demise in 1974,
Mike has continued to write and perform new material and has remained a
songwriter forever pushing the boundaries. Mike now performs in a duo
with his daughter, Georgia, on keyboards, percussion and vocals, herself
described by the Scotsman as “the nu-folk answer to Martha Wainwright.”
Their unique performances are a potent mix of new songs and
much-requested ISB favourites from over the years.
Georgia and Mike
have toured both in the UK and abroad. In 2008, they were invited to the
Hollywood Bowl as part of KCRW's World Music event featuring Devendra Banhart,
Gilberto Gil and The Album leaf, for whom Georgia played keyboard and provided
vocals. Other collaborations have included two evenings at the Barbican Hall,
London: part of the BBC series ‘Folk Britannia’ and in 2009 an evening curated
by Joe Boyd celebrating the songs of The Incredible String Band. Robyn
Hitchcock then invited Mike and Georgia to take part in an event at the Queen
Elizabeth Hall. Earlier performances included the Crossing Borders festival at
the Hague, as part of Chemikal Underground's project Ballads of the Book.
Other recent appearances include a winter-themed evening with Thea Gilmore at
the Sage, Gateshead.
Georgia is an outstanding musician in her own
right with a Masters Degree in Classical Piano. She was one of five
artists selected by the Scottish Arts Council and Chemikal Underground's
studio (Chem19) to receive two free days recording in their studio. In January
2010, one of these songs was played on BBC Radio Scotland by Janice Forsyth.
David Garland also featured her songs on New York radio station WNYC.
Alongside her solo work & performances with her father, she is currently
collaborating with The Woven Project, an acoustic North East band she met at
her first solo gig at Middlesbrough Live Music Festival 2009. http://www.myspace.com/georgiaseddon
