New Media
Pioneer - Pedram Mobedi of This
Winkis’s
“At Least It’s A Music
Blogâ€ð http://www.thiswinkis.com
Q) Tell us a little bit about your
blog. What inspired you to start
it?
A) This Winki’s is an indie
music blog that features album reviews, new artist
introductions, lists, interviews as well as some
occasional mixtapes. I live in Iran and the blog
started in December 2007 when my military service
was finished. I started This Winki’s to spread the
word, stay updated and share what I think about
what I listen to so I won’t regret it someday. I
primarily wanted to write in Persian language but
then decided to widen my audience by using
English. Q) Why do you
believe new media resources (i.e. blogs, podcasts,
Internet radio stations) have become so popular?
How have they been beneficial to artists? How have
they been detrimental?
A) In case of music blogs and
how they inspire the public ear, what causes them
to matter is that they are nakedly honest and
straightforward in what they say or present.
There’s no force on them upon being judgmental and
their points of view are mostly indiscriminate and
vividly raw. I think that’s why enthusiasts count
them in and consider what they write. They have
been deeply beneficial, if you ask me, in the
widespread growth of independent artists and
there’s almost no dark side to
them. Q) Media 2.0 has
changed the way artists communicate with fans.
Where do you envision online communication going
next? Any thoughts on what Media “3.0â€ð will look
like?
A) A bit early in the game to
discuss Media 3.0, but let me do a brown study on
this in a very impromptu style. HDDs are galloping
their extension dream upwards. In short notice,
judging by the actual development of concepts such
as data clouds, music may not be presenting itself
by means of CDs. I think MP3s, or any burgeoning
lossless format that may surface will cause major
labels not only to shrink but to vanish in thin
air. And who knows? I can picture music curiously
generated and improvised by some entities that are
not necessarily human. And I'm not talking about
Daft Punk! Q) What does
an artist have to do to get your attention? Are
their specific characteristics that you look
for?
A) Hopefully, I could find
pleasure in many genres. So next thing I do, I’ll
just forget about all those dull tags and
classifications. Buddy Holly grows on me the way
MF Doom does. I like to hear off-the-wall
songwritings and admire the ones who go off the
beaten path. But if you can also manage to settle
down and write a neat proper pop song, although
filled with stereotypes, I’m your persistent
promoter and I’m proud of
you! Q) What do you
ultimately hope to accomplish with your
blog?
A) Looking at popular blogs
around the World Wide Web, I think there are no
finish lines to blogging. At least I hope there
won’t be. So eventually, there are no
accomplishments. If you somehow make sense,
everybody likes to have more of you and read your
stuff eternally. You just have to meet their
expectations. Be yourself but don’t bore them! As
an indie music blogger, I’d like to have a bigger
audience which is a tough job, but hope is the
best thing a man can cling onto.
