Don’t let your bid go in the bin

DSC research shows that over the latest financial year over one-third of all applications to charitable grantmakers were ineligible – over 363,000 went in the bin. Did you know that if each ineligible application took 10 minutes to write it would add up to nearly 7 years of wasted effort every year? Then why do we do it? Find out more about what you can do to help stop the cycle of ineligible applications. Find out more.

Are volunteers covered by employment law? John Curran of BWB discusses the legal aspect of volunteers and the organisations they work with. Read more.

Forty per cent of regular volunteers involved in arts

Fewer Brits are donating their time or money to charities than five years ago, according to government figures released recently.

According to the latest Department of Communities and Local Government’s annual citizenship survey for 2008/2009 participation in volunteering too saw little discernable change between the 2008/2009 and 2007/2008 years, but was lower in the most recent year in comparison to 2005 levels despite massive government investment in increasing volunteering. Twenty-six per cent of adults reported to partake in regular formal volunteering and in the most recent year on record, compared to 29 per cent in 2005.

The report highlights though that “Forty per cent of regular volunteers were involved in groups relating to hobbies, recreation, arts and social clubs”.

BBC unveils Online Composer Lab

deadlineword - 28 May 2010

BBC is currently searching for new musical talent in the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers' Competition.

The contest asks young people aged 12-18 to enter an original piece of music (of any genre) for consideration by the BBC Proms judging panel. The winning entry will then be performed by the Aurora Orchestra at the Young Composers' Concert during the BBC Proms season, as well as being broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

To aid potential composers in their craft, the BBC Proms team has been travelling around the country to offer Composer Labs-  covering the basic skills of composition - to groups in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Truro.

However, those who weren't able to attend the sessions can still benefit, as footage from one of the labs has now been published on the website. The 12 videos introduce topics including melody, harmony, percussion and using the voice, as well as a performance of a Stravinsky piece by the experts hosting the class.

The BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers' Competition closes on May 28.

The Small Charities Coalition

The Small Charities Coalition exists to help small charities access the skills, experience and resources they need to achieve their aims.

The coalition is like a voluntary sector matchmaking service, matching small charities with other organisations that have the skills, experience, and in some cases resources, that the small charity lacks. These skills and experience may come from a fellow small charity - known as a friend to the Coalition - or from a supporter, for example a larger charity or a business. Becoming a friend of the coalition is FREE.

The coalition aims to match your organisation with the most appropriate skill, experience or resource you need.  They offer support and encouragement as well as free advice on best practice and good governance.

You can find more information on their website or by calling them on 0207 391 4812 or emailing them on info_at_smallcharities_dot_org_dot_uk

Subject: FREE arts training in celebratory arts for young people

Dear All,
Street Processions are running a FREE 12 day training course for people aged 16 to 25 who are unemployed or working part-time, not in education or training.

It’s a practical course, working towards assisting with the Butterfly Ball at Surrey Arts’ Celebrating Surrey Festival and Carnivalanza at Guilfest.  Participants will be able to work towards gaining an Arts Award at Silver Level.  The course will run one day a week from 3rd June to 22nd July, with more intensive periods over the events.

I would be really grateful if you could pass this on to anyone you know who you think may be interested or contacts who may be able to help publicise the course.

Many thanks
Helen
