venues:

with The One Ensemble and Neil
Davidson

John Wirtz reports another excellent Sore Fingers week and says that all
Old Time Fiddlers missed a treat in not booking for Stephanie Coleman. She
was a complete revelation and superb fiddler and John thinks it a shame that she
only had nine students! Adam Hurt’s class rallied at around 18 and he was just
stupendous. They will be back soon, don’t miss them next time.
October Sore Fingers Weekend will feature Dave Proctor on Fiddle and Sarah
Grey on Banjo. Dates are 22nd to 24th October, 2010.
In 2011 (Easter), Bob Carlin will teach Old Time banjo and Jock Tildesley
for Fiddle.
***************************************
The remainder of the mandolin workshop details from Gainsborough are now
online - the resources page at
www.foaotmad.org.uk - as mentioned
previously, treat these as 'a reminder' rather than 'fact'!

If you did my mandolin workshop at Gainsborough, the process of putting tab
& audio on the
www.foaotmad.org.uk
website has started with the Beginners material on the Resources page. The
remainder will follow shortly. Be warned, it is fairly basic and should be
treated as a reminder rather than an exact science!

Yvonne Parkes has volunteered to do a camp raffle. All proceeds go to
FOAOTMAD funds. So far she has a washboard, a bottle of extra strong cider and a
bottle of perfume - if anyone would like to donate any other prizes they would
be appreciated.

From Bluegrass Ireland....
Here is a short Youtube link to a trailer for a new tv documentary about
the banjo, being produced by Tony Trischka. Steve Martin narrates.
The trailer is a good nine minutes long, it includes footage of Pete
Seeger, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, and many others. The full documentary will be
eagerly awaited; if it surpasses the hour-long 'Echoes of America' film on the
same subject, made twenty years ago, it will be a real classic.

Hanks has made his living singing and playing traditional songs of the American
West, Cowboy and Miner’s songs; including many songs in tribute to the working
man, the music of Utah Phillips, Sam Hinton, and Malvina Reynolds. He is
known for his deep, resonant bass voice, sparse and tasteful guitar playing,
accomplished Jew’s Harpery, and careful selection of meaningful
repertoire.
He has performerd with Jody Stecher, John Wright and Gordon Bok, and was
one of the Sweets Mill String Band (with Kenny Hall). He was also a
one-time member of the Fat City Stringband, predecessor of the Highwoods
Stringband, about 1970.
Larry is in the UK for most of June and the first two weeks of July.
He
is committed for June 6, 21 and 24th and July 4th and 12th (I don't know where).
Most other dates are available if you are able to promote/recommend a gig for
him - clubs, festivals, private concert venues (house concerts, etc.), or summer
school/camp residencies.
Lucy Ray will be returning to the UK to attend Summer Camp and then she and
Mo Jackson will be looking for gigs after camp through the whole of
September. They are mainly looking at small venues/local folk
clubs/village halls and a demo and a promo pack will be available to
interested organisers.

Here's an update on the tune book being compiled by Clare Milliner and Walt
Koken from Clare's tunebooks. The transcriptions are now complete (about 1400)
as are indexes and cross references. These include details of original
recordings and dates. Notes and comments that explain furthersources etc.
are in the process of being proofed. Walt and Clare are currently working on
brief bios of the source artists and will shortly be investigating printing
options.

festivals. He teaches a wide variety of traditional dance forms including
flatfoot, square and social and can teach at all levels. If anyone can
suggest/organise a suitable opportunity for him to teach then contact him -

Hunter Robertson will be playing and teaching clawhammer banjo at the Sweet
Sunny South Festival in Hastings next September (Sept. 10-12, 2010) and is
looking for gigs around it. He'll also be in the UK and Ireland in April, and a
gig then too would be a helpful.

Michi Mathias is running the London Marathon and raising money for a small
charity for disabled people in Lewes, Sussex. Some of you have been asking
her for this info, so here it is for those interested.
The Oyster
Project is a group of people with various disabilities who organise things they
want to do or learn or get involved in, whether it's working on an
allotment, watercolour painting, cooking, IT skills, going for
wheelchair-accessible walks, seeing films, setting up an internet radio station,
camping.... whatever the members want to find a way to do. It's fairly new
and not very well-known yet, but Michi has been going to their drop-in cafe once
a week and am really impressed with the energy and creativity. It's all
being done with little money and a great deal of volunteer effort, so anything
she can raise for them will go a long way.
