From John Wirtz...
DIDMARTON! THE FINAL WORD BEFORE THE
SHOW BEGINS!
Thursday, September 2nd to Sunday September 5th, 2010 – Kemble Airfield, Near
Cirencester. Gloucestershire.
We have over forty bands appearing
on two stages in concerts scheduled from Friday afternoon right trough until
Sunday and I can assure you there will be a variety of stuff to please the most
demanding music lover. We have Bluegrass of course with headliners The
Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and Claire Lynch but Old time as well with Jock and
Vera and the Lill’ Kitties, formerly the Kitty Hawks and Native Grass
who’s harmony singing is a real treat. That’s not forgetting Jack
Lawrence who sits somewhere between old time, folk and Bluegrass and is a fabulous
flatpicker!
For those with folk tendencies,
there’s the block buster show on Thursday night with Show of Hands.
Probably one of the most successful acts ever on the British acoustic
scene. We do remind you that the Thursday night concert is a separately
chargeable event and tickets are available at the gate.
There’s plenty more variety on offer
with bands from all backgrounds playing their stuff and it’s probably best to
have a look at the website to see who’s playing and when as the running orders
for all stages is now on the site.
The Dance displays and workshops
will happen under the trees if the sun shines or in a dedicated marquee if it
rains (no chance!) and features festival residents Applejacks, Clogging master,
Jenny Read and Spank the Planks from the south coast. All going towards
making a very colourful show.
The BBMA will be running the tuition
tent and I can promise a team of amazing tutors to give you half hour lessons
which you will be able to book when you arrive on site.
The site facilities will be
operational from around mid-day Wednesday 1st September. There will be
ladies and gents hot showers and flush toilet units. Our festival
caterers will not be open until Thursday but there are cafes on Kemble
Enterprise Park and plenty of good pubs in the local area. Our main
host OGRI will not only serve you the cheapest beer on the circuit but will
probably open the bar from Wednesday evening too.
PLEASE NOTE: the sale of advance
tickets is now closed but there are tickets of all types available at the gate.
All the information is on the website at www.didmarton-bluegrss.co.uk and
we really hope to see you there. I gather even the weather’s going to be
great!
See you all there!
See you soon
John

A message and request from Ray
Banks........
Message
I just spent a very satisfying week at Swannanoa Gathering Old Time Week, near
Asheville, NC in which I attended an excellent class learning Kentucky fiddle
tunes from their collector, Bruce Greene, who featured in a recent Radio 4
programme called Musical Pilgrims about his life as a fiddle tune collector,
and made a very influential CD called Five Miles Of Ellum Wood (highly
recommended - Nick).
I asked Bruce if he would be prepared, if asked by John Wirtz, to attend Sore
Fingers as a fiddle instructor in 2012 (yes, 2012, the 2011 class will be
instructed by Jock Tyldesley). Bruce said he would be delighted.
Request
Before I ask John Wirtz if this would be possible I would like to have
approximate numbers of people who would like to attend such a class, in order
to reassure him that it would be a worthwhile project for Sore Fingers.
I would appreciate it if you could please send me an email saying whether or
not you would be prepared to attend a Bruce Greene Old Time fiddle workshop at
Sorefingers in 2012. My email address is banjoray_at_blueyonder_dot_co_dot_uk.
You can find some facts about Bruce at www.brucegreene.net
Thank you
Ray

CLOGGING
******************************************************************************
******************************************************************************
Issy Emeney would like to report that that the flatfooting workshop she ran in
May went very well. She had a mixture of complete newcomers to Appalachian
clogging and some dancers from other appalachian sides and even some Morris
dancers! They are all keen to carry on so she is starting regular daytime
lessons, the first one was Friday 25th June at Weare Memorial Hall near
Cheddar. If any cloggers would be interested in goming, please would they give
her a ring 01934 741551 or drop her a line.
She is also doing another one-day workshop on November 27th at Weare.

Banjos and fiddles, boards and bones
in hand, the Black Twig Pickers dove into a living tradition of old-time music
that surrounds their homes in Southwest Virginia and never looked back. Both scholars
of the regional sounds and advocates of an ecstatic and highly personal
approach to the music, the Twigs hold down local dance and bar gigs, play all
manner of celebrations and every so often, hit the road.
Charlie Parr is a folk and country
blues musician who is routinely labeled “authentic” and “the real deal” by fans
and critics alike. Charlie shows up with a lived-in rasp of a voice, National
resonator and 12-string acoustic guitars, a banjo and a batch of his own songs
and well-traveled numbers by Mississippi John Hurt, Charley Patton and other
cohorts from another time.

I have created a Yahoo chat group
simply called foaotmad_chat, please could you include details in the mailout.
This group like many others with Yahoo provides free email contact with members
of the group, the ability to upload files, photos, links messages etc.
This is the description of the group
Discussion group for staying in touch with FOAOTMAD members, promoting and
listing American old time music / tunes, preferred keys for playing in
sessions. Uploading music notation / tab, private recordings and listing
reference to recorded material and source etc. This group is specifically for
members of Friends of American Old time Music and Dance (FOAOTMAD). The group
will provide an email chat forum for various old time music events, views and
for sharing old time music.
The Group can be found by typing foaotmad_chat into the Yahoo groups search box
on a Yahoo home page. Things seem to work better if you have a Yahoo
account / email.
Go to the groups foaotmad_chat page and join the group. If FOAOTMAD
membership numbers are provided with the introduction email I will be able to
keep out spammers. All members of the group will be able to upload or
download material and it will be totally interactive.
