1Lewes Saturday Folk Club - change of venue and APRIL listings

Subject: Venue change Lewes Saturday Folk Club 2nd April

APRIL listings

Dear Everyone,
We now have splendid, comfortable new chairs at the Elephant. The old bow-legged ones with the prolapsed springs and sunken stuffing have been consigned to the dustbin of history, so I shall feel very out of place. N.B. On 30th. April we are in The Crown rather than the Elephant.

APR 02
BARRIE & INGRID TEMPLE  £6
Traditional Newcastle & Barrie's own songs in stirring vocal harmony with English concertina

CHANGE OF VENUE
Due to a double-booking at the Crown and a merciful last-minute cancellation at the Elephant & Castle, the Lewes Saturday Folk Club will be back in its usual room in the Elephant on Saturday 2nd.

THE CLAQUE
 £7
The Claque blends four voices of depth & maturity with serious folk pedigrees: Tom Addison, Barry Lister, Dave Lowry & Sean O'Shea. All have been in one or more of the legendary groups The Songwainers, Hollinmor & Isca Fayre. They sing mainly traditional songs in rich, striking, inventive harmonies which vary from sweet & solemn through bright & cheery to dark & dangerous.

THE CLAQUE BALLAD FORUM
10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.        Places £20
Tom, Barry & Sean are also distinguished & well-informed solo singers of ballads. Barry's solo CD Ghosts & Greasepaint features several classics. (Unfortunately Dave cannot be with us on this occasion.) In the forum they will sing & discuss some of their choice.

* You are invited to bring at least one traditional ballad to sing & talk about. Ballads chosen so far:
The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry, The Carnal and the Crane, The Outlandish Knight, Tam Lin, The Brown Girl, Sovay, Two Sisters, Lil Musgrave (Matty Groves), Thomas the Rhymer, George Collins, The Bonny Bunch of Roses , Long Lankin, The Captain's Apprentice, Gamble Gold (Henry Burstow), Barbara Allen.

10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m.  Places £30
Sara is one of the greatest exponents of American old-time songs & tunes, with a sweet, powerful voice & 5-string frailing banjo. She has a deep knowledge & understanding of US traditional music. She has toured throughout Europe, Australia & the USA, often performing with her son Kieron Means & the fiddler Ben Paley. She's also a spellbinding storyteller. The workshop will focus on bringing songs to life & how to use the banjo for accompaniment. It's for intermediate to advanced players. Lyrics will be sent in advance & songs will be taught by ear.
