St Georges Day
23rd April was named as Saint George's day in 1222
Because this day falls on Holy Saturday, in 2011 , it will move to May 2

Saint George is the patron saint of England. He's popularly identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry - but actually he wasn't English at all, he was born in Cappadocia, an area which is now in Turkey and lived in 3rd century AD.

The image of George most familiar to us today, the saint dressed in a white tunic bedecked with a red cross, astride his stallion, and skewering a dragon as he rescues a fair maiden, depends more on a late medieval and Renaissance ideal.

George's reputation grew with the returning crusaders. A miracle appearance, when it was claimed that he appeared to lead crusaders into battle, is recorded in stone over the south door of a church at Fordington in Dorset. This still exists and is the earliest known church in England to be dedicated to Saint George. The Council of Oxford in 1222 named 23rd April Saint George's Day.

From the 14th century Saint George was regarded as a special protector of the English. English soldiers were called to wear "a signe of Saint George" on chest and back. He became, in the popular imagination, English.

Others trace the origin of Saint George and the Dragon to Palestine, where the supposed dragon was controlled by Satan. The creature blocked the city's water supply and would only move if given a virgin sacrifice. Over time, all of the virgins were sacrificed except for the noble's daughter, and even she was sent to quench the castle's thirst. However, Saint George (or Mar Jiryis ) arrived at the last moment on his white horse, striking down the dragon with a spear between its eyes

According to the Golden Legend the narrative of Saint George and the Dragon took place in Silene, Libya. This town had a pond large as a lake where a plague-bearing dragon dwelled who was infecting all the countryside.

To appease the dragon, the people of Silene fed it a sheep every day, and when the sheep failed, they fed it their children, chosen by lottery. It happened that the lot fell on the king's daughter. The king, distraught with grief, told the people they could have all his gold and silver and half of his kingdom if his daughter were spared; the people refused. The townspeople were adamant that she should be delivered to the dragon just as many of their children had been. The daughter was sent out to the lake, decked out as a bride, to be fed to the dragon. Saint George by chance rode past the lake.

The princess, trembling, sought to send him away, but George vowed to remain. The dragon reared out of the lake while they were conversing. Saint George fortified himself with the Sign of the Cross, charged it on horseback with his lance and gave it a grievous wound. Then he called to the princess to throw him her girdle and put it around the dragon's neck. When she did so, the dragon followed the girl like a meek beast on a leash. She and Saint George led the dragon back to the city of Silene, where it terrified the people at its approach.

There appears to be some similarity in the fables and what is going on in Libya in the 21st Century.
It's populace fearing a monster and being fed to the jaws of death.
St George's people are coming to the rescue again. In Libya and Afghanistan for example. Some will be maimed and others will die for the cause on behalf of Britain and freedom in the world. The music community can always be counted on to be aware of the suffering of the soldiers and their families which dos not end just because the the fighting is over for them.
