Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams

Thursday 14 April 2011 7.45pm
Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury

‘The Hillbilly Pink Floyd’
Playing an utterly unique blend of rock & roll, folk, and quirky Americana, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams are a must for any music fan on Thursday 14 April at 7.45pm.
Otherwise known as The Grand Slambovians, they have been called "the hillbilly Pink Floyd," which is an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the Band, Neil Diamond, and maybe even some Frank Zappa too.
The band are bringing their 4-piece version THE GRAND SLAMBOVIANS on tour tapping into a broad palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge cinematic anthems. Possessing an exotic instrumental arsenal consisting of glockenspiel, theremin, mandolin and accordion, in addition to standard rock regalia - they are endowed with a devoted populist appeal on the festival circuit and beyond. Lead singer and main songwriter Joziah Longo (guitar and harmonica), multi-instrumentalist Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute) and Sharkey McEwen (guitar, mandolin, and backing vocals) worked together in the late '80s and early '90s and got a close, hard look at the pressures and insanities of the major-label music machines. They settled in the Sleepy Hollow area of the Hudson River Valley in New York, where, enlisting percussionist /drummer Tony Zuzulo, they formed Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams (there is no one named Gandalf or Murphy in the band).

Known for electrifying live performances and a down-to-earth connection to audiences, the group delivers a quirky, versatile, and good-humoured show that works as well in small clubs as it does on large festival stages, and has built a large and loyal fan following. Fiercely independent, the group runs its own label, High Noon Records, and has have just released their latest album The Grand Slambovians.
