  Press Release

  Hastings Traditional
Jack in the Green- Could this be the
  last if May Day Moves?

Following the success of the recent protests at Parliament about moving the
May Day Bank holiday this year’s Hastings Jack in the Green will go ahead as
usual on Bank Holiday Monday May 2nd with the hope that it will not be the
last. We hope that as many people as possible will come to see what could be
lost if the bank holiday is scrapped in favour of a holiday in dark damp October.

The festivities start at 10.00 am on Monday May 2nd with a procession with
the Jack in the Green, morris dancers, giants and drummers around the
picturesque Hastings Old Town starting at the Fisherman’s museum in Rock a
Nore Road. Heading up All Saints Street and down High Street where there will
be a pause for morris dancing until noon. The procession then moves up Croft
Road and along Collier Road to Hastings Castle. In the afternoon there will
be displays of dancing until the spirit of summer is ceremonially released at
around 3.30 and the leaves of the Jack in the Green are distributed to the
  crowd.

Leading up to the big day there will be displays of morris dancing and
concerts around the town. On Friday night there is a ceilidh with the Catsfield
Steamers at St Mary in the Castle. Morris dancing from noon on Saturday at
Winkle Island, and another ceilidh in the evening with All Blacked Up from
  Shropshire.

Sunday is May 1st so there will be dancing by Hastings Castle on the Ladies
Parlour at dawn (5,00am!). There will be a church service with morris dancing
at St Clements Church in Hastings Old Town at 10.00am and then dancing around
the town. The May Queen is crowned in Hastings Castle at 1.30pm. At 4.00 the
famous Copper Family of Rottingdean will sing at St Mary in the Castle then
in the evening there will be a dance / concert with Les Deurniers Trouveaux
from France and Robb Johnson will sing at The Stables Theatre.
