IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 23 MAY 2011
Sidmouth Folk Week Taster Programme Now Available
The brand new Sidmouth FolkWeek Taster Programme is now
available from the Sidmouth Tourist Information Centre and on the FolkWeek
website, www.sidmouthfolkweek.co.uk
The Taster Programme gives details of all the events in the Ham Marquee
(lunchtime, afternoon and evening) and Bulverton Marquee (Festival Clubhouse
and Late Night Extra), as well as a selection of the main events in the Manor
Pavilion, Bedford Hotel, Methodist Church, Blackmore Gardens Marquee (evening
ceilidhs) and Anchor Garden (lunchtime and afternoon ceilidhs).
Advance Ticketsfor many of these events are now
available – details are in the Taster Programme. Advance tickets are available
at the discount prices before 25 July. Festival Director, John Braithwaite,
urged anyone interested in buying tickets not to leave it too late. “Advance
tickets are limited in number, and last year we sold out of some of the quotas
well before 25 July!” John explained.
Amongst the Ham Marquee concert acts that are expected to be
especially popular are local award-winning duo, Show of Hands in
a concert called‘From the Heart of Devon’
(Saturday 30 July), a special joint 70th Birthday Concert for Martin
Carthy & Dave Swarbrick (Sunday 31 July), the return of
Australia’s hilarious Spooky Men’s Chorale
(Monday 1 August), and The Kate Rusby Band
(Wednesday 3 August), and Scotland’s top songwriter,
Dougie MacLean (Friday 5 August).
There is a special new production of the folk opera, The
Transports, written by the late Peter Bellamy, and starring Martin
Carthy, Eliza Carthy, Jackie Oates, Jim Moray and Jim
Causley and many others. This production is in association with
the Southbank Centre in London, with the Centre’s Artistic Director, Jude
Kelly, as director.
Other Ham Marquee guests include singer Roy Bailey and politician Tony
Benn in their show, ‘The Writing on the Wall’
(Saturday 30 July), The Lark Rise Band
(Wednesday 3 August) and a sensational Irish dance and music show, Atlantic
Steps (Friday 5 August).
At the Bulverton Marquee, high-energy Festival
Clubhouse guests include Scotland’s The Unusual Suspects
(Saturday 30 July) and The Chair (Friday 5
August), and Gallician piper Anxo Lorenzo and his band
(Tuesday 2 August). The Privateers have sadly had to cancel their gig, but we
are pleased to have The Morris On Band instead
to lead us through our folk 70s night (Wednesday 3 August).
The Taster Programme also includes details of workshops, social dances,
ceilidhs, dance displays and Sidmouth traditions and Family and Youth events.
One of last year’s concerts, In Search of Nic Jones, in
which a host of today’s top singers paid tribute to Nic Jones, who had to
retire from singing after an horrific car crash thirty years ago, is taking
place again at London Southbank’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on 28 May. The concert
is in association with Sidmouth FolkWeek.

Sidmouth FolkWeek is based in the East Devon
Regency seaside town of Sidmouth, the host, for the last 56 years, of one of
the country’s top folk music and dance festivals. Since 2005, the Festival has
