COMMUNITY VOX - SINGFEST

When is SingFest?

3rd and 4th September 2011. It's our 5th year - come and celebrate!

Where is SingFest?

Mellow Farm, Dockenfield, Farnham, Surrey

(Book early to avoid disappointment: www.singfest.org.uk)

What is SingFest?

SingFest is a festival where you make the music in friendly workshops deep in the countryside on the Surrey/Hampshire borders.
SingFest is organised by Anna Tabbush, community music facilitator and singer and Musical Director of Guildford Vox, local Community Choir

It’s friendly and small scale and is based on workshops led by well established singers and musicians. Our workshops are led by some of the most acclaimed tutors within the folk and world music scene and by the end of the weekend we’ll be performing our songs to friends and family in the beautiful setting of Mellow Farm.
Everything is learnt by ear, so no there’s no need to be able to read music. Everyone’s welcome – you don’t have to be a member of a choir, just keen to sing!

A complete escape with a chilled-out atmosphere, there’s time to also join a drumming and percussion workshop with drummer Ollie Tunmer. Or just listen or relax by the river.

Singing workshops run all day Saturday and Sunday morning with a BBQ and informal ceilidh on Saturday night and the opportunity to perform or listen to the open mic session if the dancing gets too hot to handle. This will be hosted by local singer songwriter - Susie Clarke. Finish off the evening by the bonfire with friends, a glass of local ale or cider from the bar and perhaps ………a little more singing!

We will perform learned songs to friends and family at Mellow Farm on the Sunday afternoon.
Campers are invited to arrive from 4pm on Friday to pitch tents, take in the stunning countryside and have a bit of a party before the workshops begin on Saturday.

There's plenty of local beer and cider and a large camp fire; the combination encouraging more singing!

What kind of music?
Learn traditional and contemporary songs from Britain and all over the world.

Who?
Our singing workshop tutors are:

Anna Tabbush is a singer, composer, conductor and SingFest festival director. She has taught on the past four Singfests and is back this year to warm-up our voices each morning. Anna runs community choir Guildford Vox and, among other projects, singing masterclasses, focussing on harmony and performance technique.

Lester Simpson is a singer, songwriter, actor, musician, teacher and broadcaster. Along with solo work and his a capella trio Coope, Boyes and Simpson, he teaches singing classes for Derbyshire County and Derby City Councils encouraging people to sing in harmony. Musical director of ‘Raise your Voices’ choir, he has been lead tutor on numerous workshop weekends and works with schools and community choirs.

Sally Davies is a choir leader with a dynamic and infectious style, who delights in passing on the repertoire she loves both to singers and audience. She directs 2 choirs – The Wing-It Singers in Hackney whose repertoire is largely Balkan and Georgian, and The Cecil Sharp House choir. She is also a composer and arranges many of the songs her choirs sing. She performs regularly as one half of the duo Bow and Bellows.

She leads the Sidmouth Folk Week Festival Choir and with huge amounts of media work with the BBC behind her, performing, lecturing and leading workshops now takes centre stage. Sandra began her long and distinguished career in folk music in the 60’s as part of Ewan Mc Coll’s ‘Critic’s Group.

Ollie Tunmer is a drummer and percussionist who has performed with the international hit show STOMP in the UK, Europe, America and Australia.  He teaches Afro-Brazilian percussion internationally and is co-director of Carnival Collective, with whom he has played fields, seafronts and train stations throughout the continent!
