Just received from
Trevor Hyett:
I'm looking into the
possibility of organising 3 workshops to coincide with the (More) Growling
Old Men on tour. Their last gig is in London on Friday September 23, and so
I'm looking at putting something together for the next day, Saturday Sept 24.
At this stage, I'm just testing the water to see who might be interested in
an intermediate/advanced day-long workshop on banjo with LEON HUNT; mando
with BEN WINSHIP and guitar with JOHN LOWELL
Until I know how many folk are interested, it's difficult to offer more
detail, but let's say - for now - a 6 hour day which might look something
like this:
Session 1 12.00 - 13.30 - tuition
Break
13.30 - 14.00 - queries, loose ends, tea
Session 2 14.00 - 15.30 - tuition
Break
15.30 - 16.00 - queries, loose ends, tea
Session 3 16.00 - 17.15 - tuition
Plenary
17.20 - 18.00 - feedback &/or Tutor Tunes????
My guess is that we may well be able to extend the event into the evening,
but we haven't got that far yet! Nor can I offer any idea of costs. To some
extent that might depend on the level of interest. Let me know whether you
might be interested, no commitment, just give me an idea of how well such a
workshop might be received.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Folks
This is not strictly oral storytelling- but its still about telling stories-
your personal stories!
So please partake in it, and enjoy!

Lone Twin invites you
to be a part of an extraordinary project. As people all over the world
gather to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a
remarkable boat will set sail on its maiden voyage. The boat, crafted by a
fearlessly adventurous team of boat builders and volunteers will be made from
the lives and memories of the South East. But before any of this can
happen, we need a piece of you…
We’d like your wood - but not just any old wood. Whether it’s a pencil
or a piano, extraordinary or mundane, we want something that’s a part of you,
something with a story to tell. Come and tell us that story - your
donated wood will be used along with donations from thousands of others to
build this unique 30ft sailing boat, a living archive of our lives.
Donation days are happening all over the region – it’s your chance to
meet the boatbuilding team, make your donation and discover other ways you
can help with the project.
Your nearest donation day is hosted by Lockwood Arts, Guildford Borough
Council and Surrey Artists Open Studios. Come join us at the Lockwood
Centre, Westfield Road, Guildford, GU1 1RR on Sunday 26 June from 11am - 4pm
and share your stories. We can’t wait to meet you.
The team – who include the yacht designer Simon Rogers and boat builder,
British Olympic Silver medallist and America's Cup sailor Mark Covell - are
also looking for a crew and are asking people to nominate a friend, colleague
or family member who may relish the chance to set sail with the squad next
year. Crew members must be over sixteen to take part but no prior
sailing experience is necessarily needed to be part of the adventure. Lone
Twin would like a mix of people for the team ranging from experienced sailors
to complete novices. Nominations should be made by visiting www.theboatproject.com by July 30th
2011 – you can nominate people at the Donation Day on 26 June.
Sally Abbott, Regional Director, Arts Council England, says that making a
donation to The Boat Project, nominating someone or being nominated to be
part of the boat’s crew are all great opportunities for people in South East
of all ages to take part in the arts and to feel a greater connection to the
London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
Sally says: “We’re pleased that so many people are involved in the Boat
Project so far. Being part of the crew to sail the boat on her maiden voyage
in 2012 is another excellent way to take part in the project and it will be a
very unique and exciting opportunity for the people who will be chosen to
take up the challenge. I look forward to seeing the boat set sail for the
first time next summer just in time for the Olympics and Paralympics and I
hope that many people along the South Coast will also be able to observe the
journey.”
Sally continued, “There is definitely a sense of pride and ownership from
local communities emerging as the boat takes shape and the donations days
that have already taken place have been very popular. I am sure the
enthusiasm for the nominations process will be just as great.”
Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters of Lone Twin, said: 'We've been open for
ten weeks and the response has been incredible, we've had thousands of people
through the door bringing us hundreds of donations. This project is literally
changing lives as our brilliant volunteers roll up their sleeves and learn a
whole host of new skills, everyday's a school day in the boat shed! The big
story at the moment is that we're looking for the boat's crew - nominate
someone, we'll train them if they don't already have their sea legs and then
off they go on the voyage of lifetime, sailing under some very special, and
very well known, skippers - it's an amazing opportunity. And of course we
still need wood donations, we've had everything from a piece of the Ark Royal
to a family's much used 42 year-old bath brush - we'll take anything so long
as it has story!'
The Boat Project is part of Artists Taking the Lead, a series of 12 public
art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
The Boat Project is the winning commission for the South East region and is
funded by Arts Council England.
While you are at Lockwood you can also visit the Lockwood Arts exhibition on
the last day of Surrey Artists Open Studios and donate art materials to the
Amber Foundation, who support homeless young people across the county.
