NEW THIS WEEK

******************************************************************************

******************************************************************************

FOAOTMAD members... the membership/information flyers have now been reprinted. Some of the contents have been updated and the old ones are now out of date. If you have any old ones in instrument cases, etc., please dispose of them. There will be a few new ones posted with each imminent new issue of the Old Time News.

You may know of some sitting round in local venues (our Arts Centre has) so try to remove them as well and just email me back with an address for larger quantities.

***************************************

Planning for next year's Gainsborough festival continues steadily. As usual we are looking for people to act as stewards over the weekend in return for ticket concessions. If you are interested please contact festival_at_foaotmad_dot_org_dot_uk initially and we'll pass on the details of what is needed (and what is offered in return)  as soon as we have them.

***************************************

Congratulations to FOAOTMAD Dance Representative Sara Marshall on her recent marriage to Phil Rose.

***************************************

There's a possible Old Time music evening at the Union Hotel, Penzance, Cornwall next Thursday, 20th October. Check with Bob & Sibs if you are interested just to make sure...

NEW LAST WEEK

******************************************************************************

******************************************************************************

Moonshine Creek, comprising Dave Purcell (guitar, vocals, harmonica), Aidan Lucas (fiddle, mandolin, vocals) and Mike Tavener (bass, occ. vocals) will be purveying their brand of old time American roots, and rebel songs at the Golden Ball, Cromwell Road, York on Thursday 6 October 28 July.

This is a continuing fortnightly residency so they look forward to seeing you soon if you can't get to the next one.

Start around 9 and absolutely free.

From Mark Wallace:

I've previously mentioned the idea of having a participatory event where we all get a chance to get up and do our stuff and it is now going to happen on Saturday 29th of October at the Three Horseshoes, Towersey, Oxfordshire. We'll start at three in the afternoon and continue through the evening until probably 9:30, all dependant on how many people want to play and for how long. We'll probably have a bit of an old-time/bluegrass session in there as well.

To keep things simple I am looking at using a single mic setup but if people need their own mics or DIs we can manage that as long as it doesn't get too complicated.

Let me know if you'd like to take part, what you do and how long you'd like to play for.

There's a new video just released in the USA by Craig Evans entitled conversations with North American banjo builders, in which he interviews 16 open back banjo makers east of the Mississippi. It is a 3 disc video containing 20 mins interviews with the makers in their own homes/workshops.  Mr Evans intends to do another set of videos next year featuring another 14 builders east of the mississippi. The videos cost $30 plus $8 post to the uk. Mr Evans thinks that if there is enough interest and he sells enough copies of the first 2 volumes covering USA banjo builders, he may consider travelling to Europe to cover uk and European builders.

A quick word from Gary Andrews about the picking weekend at Hanbury the other weekend:

The venue is very nice, the pub very good and the people were very friendly. The surrounding countryside and views are exellent. Pub function room was ours to use as we liked, and they have a good menu. The grass was cut for us and loos  were installed. The only thing missing was musicians, which was a shame and had a few more attended, a very pleasant weekend would have been a cracking weekend. If the venue is held next year, its well worth the trip, cheers Steve for your efforts.

***************************************

A quick note from Mark and the team at Musically Monstrous:

Having had our first gig at The Three Horseshoes with the wonderful Whitetop Mountaineers we are now looking forward to the next one on the 16th of September with Beverley Smith & Alice Gerrard. I know it's going to be another great one with some top class harmony vocals so book early to ensure a place.

Have a look at the new web site http://www.musicallymonstrous.co.uk/ for artist, venue, ticketing and future event information. Please let me know if anything on the site doesn't make sense, it's a work in progress but hopefully a worthwhile one.

And more food for thought from Mark Wallace:

Hello, some thoughts on the price of tickets - advance versus on-door.

My original thought on tickets prices was, 'why charge someone a premium because they didn't know until the night of the concert that they would be able to come'? Their loss might be that the concert is full, but why charge them more. It is helpful for piece of mind to know that people are coming and have reserved tickets but I think that a fair price is a fair price whenever you decide to buy. It could be argued that if there are tickets left then why shouldn't they be cheaper?

The dilemma here is that now I've set up with "WeGotTicket's"  for you to book advance tickets then there is a booking fee on top of the ticket price. This means that those booking in advance would be paying more than those who turn up on the night unless the on-door price goes up, however, they do guarantee getting in.

I would be interested to hear what you think if you have the time to drop me a line. Remember, all ticket sales go to the artists and I want to find a balance between helping to making their tour viable and you getting a good deal for the show. It should be easy with no-one in the middle taking a cut (other than "WeGotTicket's").

Am I making the right decisions? Should we carry on with a more casual reserving of tickets by phone/email and forget all the other shenanigans?

Let me know

Musically Monstrous have been promoting old-time and Americana concerts over the past 18 months in much the same way as Neil Whites "Crabshell" and Charlie Hardies' Willesden Folk Union concerts. That is with a vision of encouraging and promoting old-time and Americana musicians to visit and perform in the UK, to experience their music in our own locality as well as promoting a local music culture. We provide 'not for profit' promotions so that the artists can go home with at least a little money in their pockets. I know that there are others out there doing the same thing so I would would like to suggest creating an "Old-Time & Americana Venue Network" where we are simply a hub for touring artists to connect through to all those doing similar promotions. This would work by compiling a database of promoters which can be passed on to any artists who are planning a tour so that they can get in touch with each of us individually. It may be that some of you might use this this information to help them plan their tour, that would be OK too.

We could hold the database in a spreadsheet which is available by a means to be considered.

I think simple contact information, size and location of the venue will be enough for this to work, other details can be thrashed out with the artists.

Please get in touch and discuss or just send me your details.

He has been playing professionally for some years now, and has been writing this light-hearted but investigative guide to the style whilst on the road over the last few years.

The book is currently available from his website and directly from  the publisher's site, as an e-book or a paperback edition.
