American old time fiddler Aaron Jonah Lewis and young London based banjo picker are on the road the whole of November and in Ireland a bit in December too.  There's some videos of them playing here...

and here...

For the first two weeks they'll be in support of 1980s electronic pioneer Thomas Dolby (also the inventor of the polyphonic ringtone), so they'll be playing bigger venues (really big ones actually, like all those O2 academies), but shorter sets before the main act.  For the second two weeks they'll be playing smaller places on their own tour proper and this'll be a good chance to hear more of their music and pay less money too!  They'll also be joined by Rossalind Masson who'll be flat footing with them on the tour.  After that there' an opportunity to see them in Ireland with fantastic singer Noriana Kennedy.

Pete & Sue Coe: CRABSHELL INN, KINGSBRIDGE: Sunday 27 November

Dulcimer, melodeon, bouzouki and banjo! Singer, songwriter, dancer and caller, bandleader, teacher, entrepreneur, album producer and broadcaster! Little wonder they've been calling him "A One-man Folk Industry" since turning professional in 1971. Dry wit and raconteur Pete Coe has been respected, admired and hugely influential at the very centre of the folk tradition, both here and abroad, ever since. The BBC says "He's still one of the most committed, most versatile, most important folk artists in Britain".

Married to Pete, Sue Coe is one of our foremost stepdancers, choreographers, teachers, and callers, from Appalachian flatfooting to Yorkshire Longsword. She has plied her trade at most of our major festivals and on BBC TV. Her afternoon workshop here, to Pete's playing, will be based on the Appalachian traditions.

Here's an event members in the Newcastle on Tyne might like (Friday 11th Nov):

It's a showing of some of Alan Lomax's film archives.  Portions of the 400 hours of footage ? from Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana ? were edited into the 1991 television series "American Patchwork," but the lion's share has never been seen publicly. It will be presented by an archivist and producer from the Alan Lomax Archive, who will screen a selected program of this rare material. Stick around after the screening for an informal sharing of songs and stories from round these parts and beyond.

I've not been able to find any other screenings but there may be some around the country - let me know if you find any!

For more general access, ACE (Association for Cultural Equity) has launched an Alan Lomax Archive channel on YouTube. Featuring clips selected from the 400 hours of raw footage shot for Lomax's PBS American Patchwork series, the channel provides an introduction to the diverse cast of musicians, singers, dancers, story-tellers, and one-of-a-kind characters filmed by Alan and crew between 1978 and 1985, as well as an entree into the Video Catalog portion of ACE's Research Center. The first uploads include performances by Hill Country bluesman R.L. Burnside, old-time fiddler Tommy Jarrell, ballads by Sheila Kay Adams and Cas Wallin, former Mississippi Sheik Sam Chatmon, union activist and singer Nimrod Workman, hot jazz bassist Chester Zardis, and the White Eagles Mardi Gras Indians.

Bill Malone's book Music from the True Vine:  Mike Seeger's Life and Musical Journey is now out in the world.

A musician, documentarian, scholar, and one of the founding members of the influential folk revival group the New Lost City Ramblers, Mike Seeger (1933-2009) spent more than fifty years collecting, performing, and commemorating the culture and folk music of white and black southerners, which he called "music from the true vine." In this fascinating biography, Bill Malone explores the life and musical contributions of folk artist Seeger, son of musicologists Charles and Ruth Crawford Seeger and brother of folksingers Pete and Peggy Seeger.

Malone argues that Seeger, while not as well known as his brother, may be more important to the history of American music through his work in identifying and giving voice to the people from whom the folk revival borrowed its songs. Seeger recorded and produced over forty albums, including the work of artists such as Libba Cotten, Tommy Jarrell, Dock Boggs, and Maybelle Carter. In 1958, with an ambition to recreate the southern string bands of the twenties, he formed the New Lost City Ramblers, helping to inspire the urban folk revival of the sixties. Music from the True Vine presents Seeger as a gatekeeper of American roots music and culture, showing why generations of musicians and fans of traditional music regard him as a mentor and an inspiration.

Horse Archer Productions, who produced the Why Old Time? and Henry Reed dvds in 2008 are working on two new documentaries. One is on the Highwoods Stringband and the other on the Green Grass Cloggers.

If you saw either the Highwoods Stringband or the Green Grass Cloggers live, knew them personally, were influenced by them or just want to help one of the only filmmakers covering Old Time music please go to the link and see the list of perks you can get all while helping us make these two films.

There is an unreleased video of Highwoods at Brandywine Festival in 1978 of which a sample appears in the video at the link below. It will be cleaned up for the final film. Both the Highwoods and Green Grass Cloggers are on board with the project.

Musically Monstrous have been promoting old-time and Americana concerts over the past 18 months in much the same way as Neil Whites "Crabshell" and Charlie Hardies' Willesden Folk Union concerts. That is with a vision of encouraging and promoting old-time and Americana musicians to visit and perform in the UK, to experience their music in our own locality as well as promoting a local music culture. We provide 'not for profit' promotions so that the artists can go home with at least a little money in their pockets. I know that there are others out there doing the same thing so I would would like to suggest creating an "Old-Time & Americana Venue Network" where we are simply a hub for touring artists to connect through to all those doing similar promotions. This would work by compiling a database of promoters which can be passed on to any artists who are planning a tour so that they can get in touch with each of us individually. It may be that some of you might use this this information to help them plan their tour, that would be OK too.

We could hold the database in a spreadsheet which is available by a means to be considered.

I think simple contact information, size and location of the venue will be enough for this to work, other details can be thrashed out with the artists.

Please get in touch and discuss or just send me your details.
