Le QuecumBar International Gypsy Swing Guitar Festival 2010

celebrating to 100th Birthday of Django Reinhardt

200 minutes of sublime live highlights - bonus tracks interviews with Stochelo Rosenberg, Tcha Limberger and Biel Ballester.

A triple cd commemorative pack of recordings set over the nine night sold out festival (a first for London), that includes star soloists appearing on stage together for the first time; all passionate representatives of the essence of Gypsy swing.  This pack captures the energy and passion of 34 exceptional musicians; global Gypsy players from 6 countries who united and gathered in London for one reason only, to play homage to the Gypsy guitar genius Django Reinhardt and to honour his 100th birthday.

Press review by Dave Gelly The Observer, Sunday 11 July 2010

"?This triple-CD set contains some truly astounding music. The sheer virtuosity often beggars belief, but it's the inventiveness and creative abandon in the playing of such masters of the genre as Lollo Meier and Sébastien Giniaux, and especially the multi-talented Tcha Limberger, that make these performances truly remarkable. I can't say "unbelievable", because I was there when some were recorded - at London's Le QuecumBar, back in January, at the festival to celebrate Django Reinhardt's centenary - and this was exactly how it came across at the time."

SONGLINES - SIMON BROUGHTON "This was music straight from the soul, played in the perfect setting ? one of London's hidden gems"

JAZZ PREVIEW.COM "This music has deep roots, but in its soulfulness, in the versatility of its imagination and in its sheer exuberance, the ability of Gypsy swing/jazz to charm and seduce audiences remains as powerful as ever. Prepare to be enchanted! "

LONDONNET.CO.UK "the biggest collection of Gypsy Swing talent in the UK ever."

A true Gypsy musical celebration - From Belgium the legendary

TCHA LIMBERGER TRIO

This legendary Gypsy-based trio from Django's own country of birth delivers a powerful mélange of authentic world Gypsy music with instrumentals and haunting vocals.

Their captivating melodies and rhythms evoke the magical atmosphere of times when the Manouche were still travelling around with horses and wagons.  They will play music one hardly ever hears, music other then Django Reinhardt's songs sung in the Manouche or Sinti Romani dialect.  A collection of tunes and songs that represent the Gypsy culture, but seem to be almost forgotten.

Playing here in the perfect intimate setting the trio's extraordinary impact and delivery, once seen, are never forgotten.

The trio are led by the incredibly talented International Belgian blind multi instrumentalist and teacher Tcha Limberger on violin, vocals, and guitar; and his father the legendary, Vivi Limberger: Belgian Gypsy, guitar & vocals who played for years with the De Piottos and the world-renowned Waso quartet, which was responsible for the latter-day renaissance of Gypsy Swing, sadly Vivi was unable to make the Django Reinhardt festival here in 2010 so we are thrilled to be able to host this fantastic trio.  To hold this trio together the talented virtuoso Vilmos Csikos from Hungary keeps perfect time on double bass.

GUITAR AND ALL INSTRUMENTS WORKSHOP FOR ALL WITH IMPROVISING IN THE GYPSIES STYLE -

STEPHANE WREMBEL

Stephane Wrembel is one of the busiest international guitarists. His command of the tradition of Gypsy playing combined with his extensive knowledge of Rock, World and Contemporary Jazz model makes him a very unique player worldwide. Stephane last 2 albums were his own compositions.  His compositions were also used on the two latest Woody Allen movies, Midnight in Paris and Vicki Cristina Barcelona. Stephane's best-selling Mel Bay Violin book has confirmed his reputation as the world's leading tutor in Django's style. Instrumentalists from all backgrounds (Jazz, Folk, Classical) are all welcome. The Gypsies have a specific way of improvisation even if most of the time it's done on the guitar, the same philosophy applies on all instruments. Stephane, with his education (graduate from the American school of Modern Music in Paris, and Berklee College of music in Boston) and his knowledge of the tradition, was able to synthesize this philosophy into pragmatic explanations and exercises. Stephane also scored 3 full independent features, plays 300 shows a year all over the USA with his band, shared the stage with Patty Smith in NYC, recorded and toured with David Grisman, coached Mariah Carey on the guitar for the movie Tennessee, wrote and recorded music for many commercials such as Chase bank, Cherioo's, Arby's, ATnT, Frito lay's...

Stephane's message about the workshop :

I see the guitar as a martial art, a combination of practicing the right technique the right way, in a way that is liberating to express art. The workshop will be divided in two parts : from 11am - 1pm we will warm up properly, together, and work on practicing the right way. A good way of practicing is priceless, and most people don't know how to practice, which creates at best a huge waste of time and progress, and at worst injuries, sometimes definitive...Mind and fingers should awaken together.

From 2pm - 4pm, we will explore the proper and simple mapping of the neck, which is absolutely crucial for good improvisations, followed by questions/answers. The workshop will be very dynamic. I won't talk about things that can be done. We will do them. There will be no theory involved. Just doing. What you can do is the reality of your command of the instrument, and you can't experience the practice of an exercise without doing it. www.stephanewrembel.com

Food and drinks will be available Tickets www.quecumbar.co.uk Limited places

Led by Richard White, well-known multi-instrumentalist and whispering vocalist on clarinet, bass sax (or anything else that comes to hand!) accompanied either by sensational pianist Colin Good or world-class jazz guitarist Martin Wheatley.  The Swinging Cats invite you to take a sentimental journey of vintage versatility - rare 1920s tunes, torch-songs, novelties and  red-hot instrumental jazz - all generously seasoned with their own distinctive brand of irreverent quirkiness.
