Foremost gypsy jazz guitarist and composer, Paul Vernon Chester has appeared on the same international stage as many world class exponents of the genre including, Boulou and Elios Ferre, Tchavolo Schmitt, Fapy Lafertin, Romane and Angelo Debarre, to name but a few. He is a hugely experienced and respected guitarist whose work has been broadcast in the UK, Europe , Australia, and USA. His CDs have received glowing reviews by leading jazz and guitar publications in many countries. His seminal work ‘Suite Django’ and live album ‘Duets for Django’ are a unique musical tribute to the great gypsy – Django Reinhardt.

Interest in his playing has led to interviews on BBC Radio where he has discussed his work with live performances and with further invitations to talk on the life of Django Reinhardt.

His performances include Jazz festivals, theatres and concert halls, art centres and jazz clubs where standing ovations are de rigueur. Ian Cruickshank, musical director for the now legendary channel 4 documentary Django Legacy, has described Paul as: “One of the finest Django stylists in the world and a wonderful composer“. World authority on Django and gypsy jazz Alain Antonietto, compares Paul’s playing to that of the great Henri Colla. Alain has reviewed Paul’s music and playing, contributing to his web site.

Such is the respect for his playing JWC Guitars of the UK have produced signature guitars, made to Paul’s exclusive specifications. He is also an endorsee for the world renown, AER amplifiers.

He plays currently with his life long rhythm guitarist, Nick Mellor in the fantastic duo ‘Duets for Django‘. Whatever the ensemble, trio, quartet or quintet, Nick will be there.

Next to playing, Paul’s other passion is for teaching the music he loves, to the ever increasing number of gypsy jazz devotees, many of whom attend his hugely successful workshops. He is in demand as a consummate musician and highly accomplished teacher of gypsy jazz guitar.

This Teaching Holiday will be spent looking at the key ingredients that give Gypsy Jazz guitar its unique flavour, delivered by one of the top players of the genre.
We will consider the techniques and expressive dynamics that have been handed down as part of Django’s legacy. Students will be “supportively nudged” out of their comfort zone and equipped with tools they need to significantly improve their playing and with material to keep them passionately engaged with this wonderful and unique music. 20 Hours Tuition over 7days.

The abilities of students are quickly established in order to focus on individual improvement agendas. Activities are designed to enable you to work in a group, duo and individual formats. Tuition provided is designed to challenge and will cover all of the key elements of Gypsy Jazz. The week will not be heavily theoretical and employs the ‘Gypsy Tradition’ of demonstration and assimilation. The course will also  appeal to those acoustic guitarists who wish to enrich their playing, irrespective of style.

Essential elements are enthusiasm, love of music, fun, and a real desire to improve your personal best.

Playing Gypsy Jazz is the driving force with plenty of time for jamming and developing skills. The whole programme is based on Paul’s own route to this music, which he invites you to follow – many others already have.

The week will be a great opportunity  to learn with like - minded musicians, led by a hugely experienced tutor and performer in a delightful environment( France)- highly conducive to our adopted style!
