Many of you may already have heard, but for those who haven't, this Pig News
is intended to make you aware of our recent sad loss.
Grant Rule lost his life in a tragic sailing accident in the west country
on October 23rd. He was 58, and leaves behind his wife and two daughters.
As you can imagine we are devastated. Having lost a husband, father and
brother respectively, as well as a partner in all things musical, our rock
and fount of all wisdom, there is a big hole in our world that can never be
filled.
In consolation we have the knowledge that he left this earth doing something
he loved, in the company of good friends. ...And as anyone who knew him might
expect, he was singing shanties right up to the moment of the incident that
took him from us.
Only a week beforehand we had celebrated the great success of our show The
Song That Is Forever Sung at the Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks, and we are so
glad of the happy memories that event leaves us with, of Grant's last performance
with Pig's Ear.
We have decided to set up The Grant Rule Trust to further all the many things
Grant was passionate about in his working life, his social life and his
family life. It is very early days and it will be some time before we are
able to say in more detail what the Trust will do, but if you wish to make a
monetary contribution, cheques should be made payable to The Grant Rule Trust
and sent c/o St Clare's, Mill Hill, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 5DQ. In future,
details of the Trust's work will be published on www.grantrule.org.
So what of the future? ...Well, it's hard to say at this point in time. For
obvious reasons we have taken the decision to cancel those Pig's Ear bookings
we had scheduled for December and January. All the folk club gigs are planning
tribute nights in Grant's memory, with proceeds to the Trust. We are very
touched by this expression of sympathy, and hope you will all support all the
clubs who do so much to keep the folk tradition alive and kicking. The
following appearances are now cancelled:-
Tuesday December 13th: The Good Intent, John Street, Rochester ME1 1YL
Friday 16th December: Orpington Friday Folk, Liberal Social Club, 7 Station

Monday 19th December: Nellie's Folk Club, The Forester's Arms, Quarry Hill,

Sunday 8th January: Punch and Judy, St Stephens Street, Tonbridge, TN9 2AB.
Saturday 14th January: Elsie's, The Queen's Arms, Cowden Pound, Edenbridge,
TN8 5NP
Meanwhile the remaining members of Pig's Ear will take some time out to
regroup and consider how we wish to move on into the future. It is almost
unthinkable that we will not all remain involved in folk music, but right now
is too soon to be making hard and fast decisions about exactly what form that
may take. So at this time it's a matter of 'watch this space', we will let
you know as soon as we know ourselves, in the coming new year.
However there's one thing we have already decided...
The Pig's Ear Kentish Horse Folk Ale will go ahead in 2012. Due to the
change in date of the preceding bank holiday weekend and it's Queen's jubilee
celebrations, our festival will be held over the weekend of 8th to 10th June.
