If you are intending to come to the Gainsborough Festival may we encourage you to book in advance.

Apart from assisting us in knowing how many to cater for (in more ways than one) if also saves having the added distraction of dealing with large amounts of ticket money at the weekend.

From your point of view it makes the checking in process much faster, with just a receipt to exchange rather than having to join the payment queue, fill in details, get your membership checked, argue with Claire on the desk about something and write a cheque or whatever.

Details are on your booking form (also available online at www.foaotmad.org.uk ) and don't forget that stamped addressed envelope please.

**** NOTE ****

Any postal bookings received after Saturday 4th February will be held on the desk (we will confirm receipt if there's a phone number we can use). Any received after Wednesday 8th will NOT be processed and you will need to pay again at he desk (although we shall, of course, destroy your extra payment).

****      ****

STEWARDS - anyone who has asked to be considered for stewarding will be contacted with details imminently to see if they are still interested

SITE ACCESS - we've had a few queries on this point - no access to the school until 5:30 pm on the Friday. Remember it is a normal school day so we have to keep clear until staff and pupils have left. Even the organizers will only be there a few minutes before you! Please time your journey there to suit or explore the revitalised centre of Gaisborough for a while. Or there's always Tesco's cafe!!

Tracing The Migration Of Songs Between

Scotland & Ireland And North America

Tutor: Sara Grey

Scots and Ulster Scots have emigrated in such numbers that no other European Nation

has ever lost such a high proportion of it's people. In the early days these were men and women who left behind them a homeland rich in the oral tradition of song and ballad singing; an inheritance which they carried with them wherever they went. Their legacy is apparent to this day.

Sara will trace the migration of songs from Northern Ireland and Scotland to North America by singing a song, or part of it, from its Celtic source and then singing the American or Canadian version showing the changes and the similarities. The workshop is interactive and informal and the participants are encouraged to sing on choruses and refrains, and ask any relevant questions.

From Mark at Musically Monstrous:

The first, important thing to say is that due to some computer issues I have lost my email contacts list except for a few new folk who came to the last show and some others who I had details for elsewhere. Could I ask you all to consider if you have contact details for anyone who has been to our shows or is interested in the type of music we put on and forward this email to them. Hopefully we will be able to rebuild some of the email contact list and be able to continue as we have been doing.

Consequently, if you receive this as a forwarded email could you please contact me (musicallymonstrous_at_talktalk_dot_net) and let me know if you would like to receive future emails about old-time, bluegrass & Americana music. Shows will generally be at The Three Horseshoes pub in Towersey nr Thame, Oxon.

Future Shows

Beverly Smith & John Grimm on Tuesday 8th May at the Three Horseshoes, Towersey

Beverly has promised to have some recordings up on the web to show they have in store for you.

We already know about Beverly's beautiful singing and fine fiddle playing. John is as very dynamic fiddle player and will also be singing duets with Beverly in a similar style of show to the one she used to do with Carl Jones

John Yeaman regrets to announce that the 2012 Sewerby May Day Event has been cancelled.

Sewerby Hall management booked 2 separate weddings on "our" weekend by mistake, forgetting that FOAOTMAD have occupied this slot for the last seven years.

They have apologised unreservedly, and offered us the Whit Weekend, instead, but that would coincide with Spring Camp and we do not want to be in opposition.

Our  2012 September weekend - 1st and 2nd -  will go ahead as usual.
