Fairport Convention News April 2012

Hello Fairporters,

After six concerts in Italy, Fairport returns to the UK for our Spring Tour.
We'll be playing two dozen gigs throughout May. It's a packed itinerary and takes us up, down and across the land - from Perth and Glasgow to England's south coast and from Norwich across to the west country. So wherever you live, you should be in reach of one of the concerts.

If you missed us on our Winter Tour, the May outing gives you another chance to join us for an evening's music. And if you caught us back in February or March, pop along again as we always vary our repertoire on tours. This time out we'll be playing a combination of the favourites you chose for 'By Popular Request' as well as material from our most recent studio album 'Festival Bell'.

Some of the Spring Tour gigs have sold out already and tickets are going like hot cakes. So don't hang about - have a look on our gigs page, find your nearest venue and book your tickets now.

Festival Bell

Festival BellThanks to popular demand, we have had to do a re-press of Festival Bell and will be selling copies on our Spring Tour along with our two most recent releases, By Popular Request and Babbacombe Lee - Live Again. Festival Bell is also available via our website. splayCatContents

Fairport's Cropredy Convention Festival 2012

Tickets are selling well for this year's Cropredy festival so please book early to avoid disappointment; we sold out in 2007 - our last anniversary year and we don't want to have to turn anyone away! Tickets are available on our website. isplayCatContents

Fairport Acoustic Convention
A warm welcome to the festival and a short opening set from our semi-acoustic line-up.

Kieran Goss
Award-winning Irish singer-songwriter Kieran was our special guest on the 2012 Fairport winter tour. One of Ireland's best-loved performers, Kieran has several albums and a chart single to his credit.

Presenting the music of Bob Marley, this seven-piece band's irresistible reggae groove will bring a touch of sunshine and get the crowd on its feet.

Folkrock orchestra Bellowhead put in such a storming performance when they appeared at Cropredy a few years ago that you begged us to re-book them and we are happy to oblige.

Springing from the late 1970s New Wave, Squeeze has remained one of the UK's best-loved bands for over thirty years. Their style has been described as 'classic guitar pop meets post-punk realism'. Featuring the songwriting partnership of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, Squeeze has a raft of chart hits to its credit.

Ioscaid won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in February. This lively six- piece group plays traditional Irish music with youthful verve and consumate musicianship.

Ellen and the Escapades
This Leeds-based quintet blends folk, pop and rock into a distinctive and appealing sound. Featuring Ellen's dusky vocals and well-crafted songs, the band won Glastonbury's Emerging Talent Competition and played the 'BBC Introducing' stages at Reading and Leeds Festivals.

Dead Flamingoes
Dead Flamingoes is a musical collaboration between Kami Thompson (daughter of Richard and Linda Thompson) and James Walbourne. Their music mixes a little country, some rock and roll and a lot of folk - "music simultaneously fresh as milk and old as bones" as they put it themselves.

Hailing from the Scottish-English border, Tarras is a six-piece outfit playing an exciting blend of self-penned songs and traditional material. The band's timeless sound is fused with a contemporary style and delivery.

Larkin Poe
American sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell are renowned for tight harmonies, strong instrumental performances and story-telling in song. With roots in classical music, folk, and bluegrass, Larkin Poe's progressive acoustic sound delights audiences wherever they play.

Saw Doctors
Award-winning chart-topping Saw Doctors is one of Ireland's best-loved musical exports. Great songs played with breathtaking energy make Saw Doctors one of the best live acts in the world.

Richard Thompson
Cropredy would hardly be Cropredy without former Fairport member Richard Thompson, one of the most revered guitarists and singer-songwriters in the world.

Joan Armatrading
Joan Armatrading, one of the first British female singer-songwriters to gain international success, has never rested on her laurels. With numerous gold, platinum and silver discs to her name, Joan's live stage show remains as vibrant and exciting as ever.

Richard Digance
Richard's crowd-pleasing Saturday opener has become a traditional feature of Cropredy. Get yourself on the field and sing along.

Morris On
Fairport founder-member Ashley Hutchings leads a spectacular celebration of England's rich morris dancing tradition. Look out for surprise guest musicians on stage.

Brother & Bones
Drawing on elements of rock, folk and indie music, Brother & Bones combine harmony vocals, ringing guitars and driving rhythms into a storming live show which is powerful, uplifting and impeccably performed.

Another young band, five-piece Calan brings a fresh contemporary sound to traditional Welsh music. Their set presents sparkling melodies and tunes and features spirited Welsh step dancing. Calan will be joined on stage by their producer, former Fairport member Maart Allcock.

Big Country
Grammy-nominated post-punk Scottish rock band Big Country enjoyed a string of hits and gold discs throughout the 1980s. Featuring founding members Bruce Watson, Tony Butler and Mark Brzezicki joined by Jamie Watson and Mike Peters. Anthemic songs and a powerful performance make them one of the best live acts on the festival circuit.

Dennis Locorriere
Renowned as the former frontman of Dr Hook, Dennis returns to Cropredy to fill the prestigious Saturday slot before Fairport take the stage. His set combines great songwriting with a distinctive and passionate voice.

Fairport Convention and guests
As always, the festival will end with a spectacular three-hour set by Fairport Convention and musical guests. This annual Cropredy set gives Fairport a chance to really stretch its wings and roam far and wide through a repertoire stretching back forty-five years.

See you there!

Simon, Peggy, Ric, Chris and Gerry.
