Hello
Sorry it's been so long since the last newsletter - it's been a very busy time
at Folk in the Barn Towers - we've had the West Wing renovated and I've even
been busy with a paintbrush and pasting table myself! What with that and
trips to London Town, children home for the hols and blocked drainpipes and
other glamourous goings on, work stuff took a bit of a back seat for a while.
But we're back - renovated and refreshed and we've even joined the 21st
century and gone mobile! Spent a chunk of the profits on a cute new laptop,
so now if you're passing Pret a Manger in Canterbury and see me typing away -
it's work ok? honest - not enjoying myself one bit - no no ;o)
So what's new on the folky front?
Firstly - we have plenty of tickets available still for the next FitB concert
- this Saturday night at Christ Church Uni Chapel.
Boo Hewerdine and Brooks Williams together as 'State of the Union'
Boo is a master songwriter and has written for everyone from Lau to Eddie
Reader (Patience of Angels) to Chris Difford to Mel C and Natalie Imbruglia -
but is also a charismatic and engaging performer in his own right. Brooks
from Georgia USA is a superb smokey voiced singer and blues/slide guitar
player, now living in the Uk since meeting and marrying a very good friend of
mine a couple of years ago! Together - Boo and Brooks have come up with some
great songs and arrangements of their own and some excellent covers - check
out this version of the Pet Shop Boys well known song - I know which I
prefer....

Boo has also appreared on the BBC Songwriters Circle programme with Justin
Currie and Chris Difford, here he is appearing on the Andrew Marr show....

I have heard the new album and it's excellent - this will be a show of great
lyrics/songs, guitar skill and camaraderie - both superb entertainers - we are
getting two for the price of one - tickets a mere £12 in advance (book online)
or £13 on the door - unless you're a student when they are £8. Far too many
left for my liking at the moment. If you're free Saturday night do come along
and support these guys in their new venture together - they and I will be very
pleased if you can. Christ Church Uni Chapel makes a superb music venue, with
ample parking right outside in the Uni car parks. We've no Mick this week to
help you park so It will be a struggle but you'll have to cope!
Don't forget that the living legends that are Fairport Convention are
returning for their annual Spring visit to Canterbury Cathedral Lodge on May
6th. Tickets selling well for this concert so please book early if you want
to ensure getting yours.

available if booking all three events. Would anyone be able to offer lifts
back to Canterbury after the gig, for those coming by public transport?

New Show - Benji Kirkpatrick
We've just added a new show that is now open for booking. Another early
Sunday evening at the Black Robin after the huge success of our first with Reg
Meuross back in January. This time the brilliant Benji Kirkpatrick is coming
to do a solo show on the 10th June. Start time 6.30pm Tickets £11 in
advance.
Benji is a fantastic musician - son of folk legend John Kirkpatrick - full
time member of Bellowhead, Faustus, The Seth Lakeman Band to name a few of his
musical commitments. An exciting and charming solo performer in his own
right.
If you like Seth Lakeman, Jim Moray, Megson etc - you'll love Benji. Here he

Day trip to London
Lynette and I saw some of you two weeks ago at Kensington Village Hall or the
Royal Albert Hall as it's sometimes known. We had the honourable task of
selling raffle tickets in aid of the teenage cancer trust and the alzheimers
society, to win the David Oddy Cello Mandolin at Show of Hands 20th
anniversary concert. It was a fun afternoon, we had a briefing in one of the
dressing rooms in the 'bowels' of the Albert. On our way out to start selling
we bumped into Steve Knightley coming out of his dressing room looking very
smart in a black dinner jacket and bowtie! I said 'oh Steve are you excited?'
to which he nonchantly replied 'nah - it's just a gig!' but with a twinkle in
his eye - so I think he was really! It was a fantastic evening - so happy to
be there and be part of it - a real celebration of a success story, there was
a lot of love in the hall for Show of Hands. There's a lovely article here

Today Steve and Phil are at the House of Commons, invited as the only folk
representatives at the repeal of the current ludicrous licensing laws. About

I've been asked to give this excellent event a mention.....
Tim Edey and Brendan Power are giving a concert in support of the Westgate
Hall, Canterbury.
Guitarist/Box player extraordinaire TIM EDEY and Harmonica guru BRENDAN POWER
are two of the most exciting & original musicians on the contemporary acoustic
scene. Celtic-Blues based but mixing genres with impunity, they defy
boundaries & excel at improvisation, making every gig a seat-of-the-pants ride
for them and the audience. They have won "Best Duo" at the BBC Radio Two Folk
Awards.
12th of May, at the Westgate Hall (Westgate Hall road CT1 2BT) Doors open at
7, concert starts at 8.
Tickets will be £10 in advance or £12 at the door. Limited numbers, book early

Supporting this will help the organisers raise much needed funds to refurbish
the hall which will benefit everyone in the area.
The Unicorn - Bekesbourne - St Georges Beer Festival
This coming weekend the cosy and popular Unicorn Pub will be holding a three
day festival, with music and morris and mummers and more on Friday, Saturday
and Sunday. A mix of top local bands from our own Acoustic Architects to the
fab young group Coco and the Butterfields to the Betteshanger Brass Band -

Lastly - phew! I'm really proud to tell you that Folk in the Barn has been
nominated for a Culture Award.

We've been shortlisted in the 'experience' award which isn't open to public
voting, but i'm sure it would help if anyone wanted to write in support of
us.....

our heartfelt thanks for your continued support of what we do. It's been a
great year of music so far - with more on the way - please keep supporting and

artists - and is cheaper for you - if you can.
